I know this has been happening a lot lately, and I know how annoying it is.
I am generally okay with reimbursing things for this sort of problem, but it is hard to know if people are trying to take advantage of my, uh, kindness.

If you lost items that you really want back, please PM me here on the forums with some details of how the items were lost, and a list of the items you are interested in having replaced. I will negotiate replacements with you personally. If you only lost 37 cobblestone, please don't PM me.

Note: If I find you you lie about or exaggerate your losses to try to get more items than you lost, I will permanently ban you and do everything in my power to dissuade staff from listening to your appeal that you will probably make, so don't be an asshole. :)

PM away.

Off-Topic Discussion / Wandernorth - Part VI: The Black Tapir

Part VI: The Black Tapir

It was a cloudy night. We figured we had a twenty minute window to get the gate unlocked, lure it out, and get it to the wagon and on the plane. Without looking up from the binoculars, Mr. Rey gave the signal that the guard was leaving. He had been such a lifesaver the entire time we were in this country that it felt strange that this was probably the last time we'd ever see him. Even stranger that our last hurrah together was centered around stealing a tapir named Bodil.

As the guard disappeared around the corner, Kim hopped out of the basket and looked back at us with a bewildered look on her face; the gate wasn't even locked. I readied the squeaky toy we got from Mr. Rey's shop in Valparaiso from my pocket. Once she swung the gate open, I took aim and threw the toy right at the Bodil's butt. It only let out half a squeak, but it was enough to get the animal running. Kim directed it down the path towards the wagon.

I hopped out of the tree, closed the gate, and started down the path too. I looked back at Mr. Rey, and not quite sure what to do, I waved. He nodded his head and made a peace sign with his hand and started to say something. Just as he began to speak, he quickly glanced over to see the guard was coming back. Shit. Why was he back so soon? He'd obviously notice the missing tapir, which means we had to somehow get it on the wagon and to the plane in a fraction of the time we had planned for.

The guard stopped before he came around the corner and leaned on the wall. He lit a cigarette and started writing in a pocketbook. I guess the universe was giving us another few minutes to finish what we had started. But the relief was bittersweet; I suddenly remembered that the stupid squeaky toy was still sitting in Bodil's pen. Heart racing, I looked at Mr. Rey and mimed as if I was squeezing the toy in my hand. His eyes widened. They could trace the toy back to his store in Chile.

He looked at the guard and then back at me, motioning that he was still smoking and writing. As if kidnapping a tapir wasn't enough, going back in the pen with the guard directly on the other side of the wall was perhaps the riskiest thing we'd done in Argentina. I took a deep breath and quietly crept back towards the gate, often looking back at Mr. Rey for any warning gestures. I gently opened the gate just enough to get through, and made sure the latch didn't make a sound upon closing. I snuck to the middle of the pen and carefully reacquired the squeaky toy. Turning around, I held it up to show Mr. Rey, but he wasn't paying attention to the toy in my hand.

The guard was stamping out his cigarette, and Mr. Rey was frantically motioning for me to get out of there. I glided back to the gate, pushed it open, and swiftly began walking down the path. The gate slammed closed and the latch clattered. Fuck me. I looked over my shoulder to see that Mr. Rey was gone and that the alerted guard had just realized that a heist was literally taking place behind his back.

As I sprinted to the rendezvous wagon, I couldn't help but think of what a botched job this was. There was no way we were getting out of Argentina with this tapir now. I got to the road to see that the wagon was connected to the stagecoach and Bodil was already on it. "Go, go, go!", I screamed. Gordon whipped the reins and the horses got moving. I jumped in the stagecoach with Kim.

"Where the fuck were you?", she demanded.

"I had to go back for this god damn thing", I pulled the squeaky toy out of my pocket, "I dropped it in the pen. They would have been able to trace it back to--"

"--I know, I know. Did anyone see you?"

I paused for a moment, "Yes. A guard saw me. He heard me slam the latch on the gate."

"You told me you've done this kind of thing before", her tone of voice was almost condescending.

I defended my actions; "Fuck you, I was covering our tracks."

"You were covering his tracks."

"He's done a lot for us, Kim. I know you two have history, but I felt like we owed him."

She looked down and shook her head, "Let's just get to the plane."

We arrived at a dirt airstrip littered with garbage and old military equipment, and among it was the old Pilatus turboprop plane that Félix stole from the Argentine military and left here for us. We had to get the tapir in the cargo hold. Gordon grabbed our things and ran to the plane to start the engines while we dealt with Bodil. We untied him from the wagon and jogged with him across the runway. As the turboprops fired up, Bodil got startled and veered off course, tripping over what looked like a very old military satellite phone. Our luck couldn't be worse, because just then, the guards showed up.

"No se muevan, cabrones!", they ran at us and yelled, holding crossbows loaded with tranquilizer bolts that would normally be used on large animals such as a tapir. We got Bodil running again, as crossbow bolts whizzed by our heads. As the guards got closer, their shots became more accurate. They managed to hit Bodil in the rear. Kim yelped as a bolt entered the tricep of her left arm. We ushered the tapir onto the plane and jumped in with him. The engines roared as Gordon pushed the throttle up to take off.

The plane received a series of tranquilizer bolts to the left side of the fuselage as the plane moved along the runway. As we taxied, we moved out of range of the shouting guards and took off. While the plane wasn't going to fall asleep from the bolts, the tapir certainly did. The bolt in Kim's arm didn't get a chance to administer very much serum as it had gone through her muscle with the tip pointing out the other side. Regardless, she was drowsy and bleeding, and we had essentially no medical supplies. Gordon also noticed that some of the bolts were uncomfortably close to the left propeller. Should they get into the engine, we could be in big trouble.

So, where are we at? Somewhere deep in northern Argentina we kidnapped a tapir named Bodil, we escaped in a stolen military plane with people shooting at us, one of us is bleeding from a tranquilizer crossbow bolt, we have no idea if Mr. Rey was able to get away unharmed, there are likely many people hunting us, and now we have to fly our way across the border and land safely in Paraguay to try to meet up with Félix. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a million dollar bounty on my head.

Insanely far from home, and even further from being home free, I can't help but think about how I wound up in this situation. A feeling of dread hits my heart as the plane breaches the clouds.

General Discussion / News: Less rollbacks, less minecarts
« on: 27 January 2013, 05:27:17 PM »
I coded an autosave feature to run every 5 minutes, meaning that should cut back on rollbacks big time.

ClearLag removes ground items/entities every hour, and we re-added minecarts to this sweep.
If you see the 2 minute warning, consider grabbing your cart and waiting a moment.

Do me a favour and email me (with the same email you donated with) your minecraft username. My email is CanadaDan7@hotmail.com
OR, private message me here on the forums with the same info (including your email).
Simple as that.

I need to (re)compile a list of donors. While I know who almost all of them are, there are a few here and there that need to be confirmed and written down.
Emailing me your username will help make the process much quicker.

Thanks for donating, and thanks for helping out.

General Discussion / VillageCraft is back online
« on: 9 January 2013, 05:55:25 PM »
After a little downtime, and many many hours of fixing, the server started and is so far running completely error free.
Please feel free to join, and please feel free to report any unusual server behaviour in this thread. I'm talking things like insane block lag or instances of falling into the void for no good reason.

The server had a severe chunk error which would cause it to lag heavily and bog down to the point of semi-crashing, and with the help of our kind host, Creeperhost, and over 8 hours of running software to fix it, it looks like it did.
Sorry it was down for so long!
Come play!

~The VillageCraft Staff

PS: Still --ZERO-- errors in the console. :D

Fireworks all around!

https://rt.com/usa/news/westboro-church-anonymous-group-233/

Hacktivists with the Anonymous movement and other online groups have waged a war on the Westboro Baptist Church following news that the group plans to demonstrate on the site of the Shady Hook Elementary School massacre.

Shirley Phelps-Roper of the notorious Westboro Baptist Church announced Friday that the Topeka, Kansas-based religious group would be picketing in Newtown, Connecticut, where less than five hours earlier a shooter opened fire killing more than two dozen people, mostly children.

“Westboro will picket in CT,” Shirley Phelps-Roper, a lawyer and spokesperson for the group, confirmed Friday afternoon over Twitter. On Saturday, she added, “Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.”

Anonymous's response: “Since your one-dimensional thought protocol will conform not to any modern logic, we will not debate, argue, or attempt to reason with you. Instead, we have unanimously deemed your organization to be harmful to the population of The United States of America, and have therefore decided to execute an agenda of action which will progressively dismantle your institution of deceitful pretext and extreme bias, and cease when your zealotry runs dry,” the message continued.

“We will not allow you to corrupt the minds of America with your seeds of hatred. We will not allow you to inspire aggression to the social factions which you deem inferior. We will render you obsolete. We will destroy you. We are coming.”

General Discussion / Minecraft login servers are down

Has nothing to do with VC. As always, if it is an insanely long outtage, we will backup the server, turn of the requirement for validation, and let anyone log in.
Otherwise, these things usually take less than 90 mins to resolve.

General Discussion / NEW - Local Proximity Chat
« on: 28 November 2012, 09:35:55 PM »
I just wrote code to allow for local chat within a 150 block radius.
The command is a lower case L: /l

So, to chat locally just type something like...
/l I eat cheese lots of times.

Let me know if 150 blocks is too short, too far, or just right. Enjoy!

NOTICE: These rules are now in force.

The End has long been in a grey area in terms of rules. With no protection granted, it was a permanent Outlands, though there was often confusion with the specifics. So we are changing them, with input from the Parliament (from a fairly long time ago...)

Changes:
World Changes:
- The small spawn island in The End will be PVP-Off and protected, with some info signs and a portal/warp to go back to the Overworld.
- The main island in The End will be completely re-generated. It may also be re-generated from time to time if it needs it.
- The outer void of The End will be left alone, except for signs, which will be removed to remove lockettes.

New Rules:
- PVP is on everywhere in The End, with the sole exception of the small spawn island.
- Griefing is allowed everywhere in The End.
- TNT is on in The End.
- Lockette is off everywhere in The End.
- Nothing can be protected in The End.
- Nothing can be claimed in The End.
- You risk everything when you make the decision to walk off of the spawn island in The End.

What the Staff and PRs won't do:
- Enforce/handle grief complaints.
- Enforce/handle PVP complaints.
- Enforce/handle theft complaints.
- Enforce/handle protection requests.
- Enforce/handle land or structure claims.

Why this change is taking place:
- To clear up confusion about The End.
- To give players a unique area where they can engage in high-risk gameplay with almost no chance of breaking any rules.
- As a sick social experiment

The world edits will take place ASAP, the new rules and everything else will come into effect now.

Note: Admin accounts and SM accounts with many powers are exempt from the rule change, and must follow standard rules. Staff should enquire about their specific status if they plan on entering The End for anything other than basic building-mining/hunting/self-defence PVP/Staff work. Admins and powerful SMs shall not use their knowledge or powers available to them on their Staff account for the benefit of an alternate account, should they choose to use one in The End. Players may not harm Staff if they are doing Staff work.

Parliament | Suggestions / Upcoming votes
« on: 18 November 2012, 11:23:12 AM »
Based on MP feedback, and pending bukkit/plugins being ready to use, we will likely vote on:
-Mob Arena plugin
-Mobcatcher plugin
-Backpack plugin

We will not vote on Dynmap. Instead, we will just try to re-add it to the server if we can.

Feel free to post your thoughts on any of these below.

General Discussion / Exploiting the server
« on: 12 November 2012, 06:41:46 PM »
In the past, players have discovered exploits that could allow someone to gain a blatantly unfair advantage over others on VillageCraft.
Players can respond to these exploits in 3 ways:
A) They don't realize that it is an exploit, or for whatever reason ignore it,
B) They tell staff about it so that it doesn't get exploited, or;
C) They exploit it.

In circumstance A, we do nothing regarding that player.
In circumstance B, we reward that player. Sometimes quite heavily. I will never disclose what the rewards are, but I will simply say that it is hugely appreciated, we realize that kind deeds have positive value, and you earn a great deal of respect from us.
In circumstance C, we punish the people who are essentially stealing money out of the cash register while the store clerk isn't looking.

Today, a few players noticed a showcase sitting randomly on one of Qualia's streets selling unlimited gunpowder for 10 cents a piece. The showcase was accidentally put there by CJ from a test server when he was repairing showcases. The first player to find it falls into category A. Nobody opted for category B in this case. Everyone else to find it seems to have opted for category C.

Nothing will happen to the player in category A (zues9999999) and he can keep the gunpowder he bought below market value, and we will 100% pardon him of any wrongdoing.

As for everybody else...
Players who took less than 1,000 items from the showcase will simply be charged market value for those gunpowers.
Players who took more than 1,000 will be charged market value plus 1 hour of tempban per $1,000 dollars of value. The largest punishment in this case is $211,224 plus almost 9 days in tempban time. All players punished have the opportunity to appeal.

PLEASE tell us of any exploits you discover, we will love you long time (and reward you).

Please DO NOT exploit them. Not only is it quite easy for us to see exactly who did what, but it also hurts the server which we have all put a ton of work into. We want everyone to have a fun place to play, not a place where a select few get ahead because of their unfair exploitation.

<3,
Akomine

The full calculated list of exploited gunpowders, the names of those who took part in the exploitation, and the exact punishments can be seen here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlsRxq2dDVZSdHpFVTR1YktQNG1kNmhzX0RYODhJT0E
Should any of these players be pardoned on appeal, I will edit this post, the information in that link, and give a public apology.

General Discussion / Public Representative Nominations
« on: 7 November 2012, 07:02:31 AM »
Because Islid abandoned VillageCraft without notice, and we have confirmed he probably isn't coming back, the position of Public Representative is vacant. The server is growing since the release of 1.4, and we need to fill the position.

Given enough interest, we might have an election for the role. The staff will technically have the final say. Note that there can be more than one PR.

Post a reply here to nominate yourself or someone else for the position. Please ensure the person you nominate would do the job well by reading this link to see a bit about what a PR does: http://www.villagecraft-server.com/forum/index.php?topic=312.0

« on: 22 August 2012, 06:01:13 PM »
VillageCraft will remove MCMMO from the server and place it as a backup in a secure archive at a random time tonight.
We believe it is compounding the lag problem that is caused largely by Bukkit.
We are sorry to those who enjoy MCMMO, but we have to try to fix this lag!

We hope you will understand,
