Parliament | Suggestions / Community Minister of VillageCraft
« on: 24 October 2016, 08:54:55 PM »
Community Minister of VillageCraft:
The Community Minister (CM) is an elected position.
VillageCraft's CM organizes in-game events, can choose to be a Senator on the VC Senate, and can certify Simple Parliament Votes.
The current Community Minister of VillageCraft is Daypath.

Quick-Read Version:
A - The CM is elected to run Community Events, can become a Senator, and can certify Simple Parliament Votes.
B - Elections occur by request only. Any MP may request a new election at any time. Any MP may nominate candidates and run in the CM election.
C - The CM is given powers to run Events, and may appoint a CM Team to help.
D - The CM is offered a Seat in the Senate of VillageCraft at the start of every new Senate Session.
E - The CM has server permissions, a tag, and receives compensation.

-------

VillageCraft Community Minister Official Guidelines:
All nominations, signatures, and elections take place on the Parliament Board of the VC Forums, and all participants must be Members of Parliament.

A
Roles:
1. Event Organizer
The CM serves as a community event organizer on VC. The CM's goal shall be to create and run events to help bring the community together to have fun and make the server a better place to play. This could include building competitions, PVP matches, elytra races, and anything else to get players involved. The CM will run the events, but will work with the Staff to make sure the event is possible before organizing it.

2. Sit as a VC Senator
Before the start of a Senate Session, the CM is offered the choice to become a Senator in the upcoming Senate. For full details, see Section D.

3. Certify Simple Parliament Votes
The CM can represent the players' interests by certifying requests for Simple Parliament Votes in the VillageCraft Parliament. For more information on types Parliament Votes, see the Parliament Guidelines.

B
Election Process:
CM Elections are triggered by player request. Elections can be requested at any time. Outgoing CMs serve until a new incoming CM starts their term. VC Staff run the elections, or may assign someone to do so.

1. Election Request
i. Requests for new CM elections are requested on the anonymous election request board. The minimum threshold of unique players required to trigger a CM election relative to the amount of time the current CM has been serving is listed below.
- Under 2 months served: 7 players and 1 Staff Member
- 2-4 months: 6 players
- 4-6 months: 5 players
- 6-9 months: 4 players
- 9-12 months: 3 players
- over 12 months: 2 players

ii. Election requests during the first 2 months of a term expire once the first 2 months of the term is reached. Each further request expires after 1 month.

2. Candidate Nominations
i. CM candidates will be placed on the election ballot with:
- 3 nominations (including the candidate themselves), and;
- A declaration they want to run.

ii. The nomination process ends and proceeds to an election when there are at least 2 candidates and no more nominations are coming in.

3. Election
i. The CM election between all nominated candidates uses the Approval voting method, where voters approve all candidates they feel would be good in the role. If there is a winner, they are offered to become the new Community Minister.

ii. If there is a tie for winner, a First-Past-The-Post election ballot between the tied winners will determine the final winner, where voters make only 1 choice. Further ties will be resolved with a random number generator.

4. Term Begins
i. The new CM term begins within 15 days of the election result, on a day chosen by the election winner.

ii. The previous CM is removed as the new CM's term begins.

C
Events and CM Team:
The CM organizes and runs community events, and is given permissions to do so. The CM can appoint a CM Team to help.

1. Event Organization
i. The CM runs community events open to VC players. The CM determines prizes, refereeing, and judging of competitions. Some aspects may require Staff approval and assistance. The CM can post a Schedule and coordinate with Staff to advertise events.

ii. The CM can be given server permissions to make their job easier and more efficient. These shall be determined by the Staff.

2. Community Minister Team
i. The CM can appoint a team at their choosing. Up to 2 members of the team can receive the CM Team Role which will provide additional server permissions suitable to run server events, subject to staff approval.

ii. CM Team members are usually not offered compensation or a tag. However, in the instance of CM Team member(s) running events in other time zones, they may be provided with a temporary CM Team Tag in order to reduce confusion.

D
Community Minister Seat in the Senate of VillageCraft:
The CM can join any new Senate Session and become a Senator without needing to be selected through sortition. This allows the CM to represent VC members and participate in the democratic process easily if they choose to do so.

1. Community Minister Senate Seat
i. Prior to a new Senate Session, before Sortition, the Community Minister chooses whether to sit as a Senator for the upcoming Session.

ii. The CM can indicate their choice up to 10 days before a new Senate Session begins, and must make their decision before the Upcoming Sortition List is closed (24 hours before the start of the new Session).

iii. If the CM does not choose, declines the seat, fails the Competency Test, resigns from the Senate, or ceases being CM, the choice is not offered again until the start of the next Senate Session.

iv. If the CM is a Senator and ceases to be the CM, that individual is removed from the Senate, creating a vacant seat.

E
Privileges, Compensation, and Emergency Removal:
Privileges:
1. The CM will have the ability to talk directly to Staff about potential community events and CM Parliament Vote Initiatives.
2. The Community Minister will be given server powers to run community events and CM Parliament Vote Initiatives.
3. The CM will be a local Forum Moderator for the Parliament Board.
4. The CM will have an in-game [CM] tag in front of their name.

Compensation:
5. The CM will be paid $250,000 VC Dollars every 2 months if their mandate was met.

Emergency Removal:
6. The CM can be removed at any time by Staff Vote if there is evidence that they have abused their position or privileges.

All nominations, signatures, and elections take place on the Parliament Board of the VC Forums, and all participants must be Members of Parliament.

I do not know if the UK will actually leave the EU because of this. I think in the near future we are going to see a lot of arguments about why there should be another referendum, and because of the obvious flaws in the run-up to this vote, it might actually happen.

Furthermore, I think this pretty much solidifies that Scotland is going to leave the United Kingdom.

But I'm not hugely knowledgeable about all this, as I'm not British. I know we have a bunch of Brits on the server, anyone care to chime in with your own take on all of this? Pissed off? Satisfied?

General Discussion / Longer days and nights
« on: 13 April 2016, 08:54:12 PM »
The day-night cycle in Minecraft is usually 20 minutes:
- 10 min day
- 1.5 min dusk
- 7 min night
- 1.5 min dawn

We have doubled the length of the day-night cycle to 40 minutes, so now on VC it's:
- 20 min day
- 3 min dusk
- 14 min night
- 3 min dawn

That means about 26 minutes of mob-free daylight to build, explore, and do anything you need to do. This should be a lot more time to do what you need in a day. The night is a bit longer now too, so beware of that. To balance this, the crazy mobspawning rates we were seeing have been lowered quite a lot. It should be a lot fairer now.

You'll notice the sun, moon, and stars move through the sky a lot slower now. I think it feels pretty nice this way. Please let us know what you think.

How to set your Minecraft version to 1.8.9 to play VillageCraft:

1. Click "Edit Profile".

2. In the "Use version" drop-down box, select "release 1.8.9".

3. Click "Save Profile".

And that's it. Play the game!

Most Minecraft servers won't be updated for a while, especially ones with plugins. We can probably get VillageCraft Vanilla updated ASAP though. Cheers!

We will hopefully get VillageCraft updated ASAP as it looks like bukkit/spigot were ready this time 'round.

Thought I'd let those of you who use Steam know. http://store.steampowered.com

Feel free to highlight some games you see on sale.

My highlights:

Elite Dangerous
67% off (roughly $15 or £10) http://store.steampowered.com/app/359320/

Space simulator that takes place in the Milky Way 1300 years in the future with trading, fighting, piracy, illegal smuggling, and much more in a variety of detailed and immersive ships to fly. Choose the role(s) you'd like to play, buy and outfit your ship to fit those roles, and do it all co-op with friends if you'd like (or strangers, up to you). Very immersive first person spaceship flying. Pretty cool game, it's going to be developed for the next decade piece by piece.

If you decide to buy Elite, you may choose to buy the expansion (which allows you to land on and explore 1:1 scale planets) at https://www.elitedangerous.com/, as it comes out in December and includes the base game with it.

If you'd like an open world spaceflight and spaceship dogfighting game, play this game.

Chivalry
80% off ($5, or $7 for expansion + base game) http://store.steampowered.com/app/219640/

First Person Swordfighting, where you can attack multiple ways, and where accuracy counts. Timing, footwork, and placement of your swings, slashes, downswings, jabs, kicks, parries, and blocks are all important. Very fun online multiplayer game unlike any other. Third person view also available.

The base game Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is with medieval knights and archers fighting, the expansion Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior includes knights and adds vikings, samurai, ninjas, spartans, and pirates. Both are very fun.

If you like cutting off the heads of your enemies in the heat of battle, play this game.

Cities Skylines
50% off ($15) http://store.steampowered.com/app/255710/

The city-builder that modern Sim City games should have been. This is an excellent city builder that is smooth to play, fairly easy to learn, and provides a very open platform for you to plan your city however you like. The game has steam workshop mod support, so you can customize however you like.

If you like building, design, and planning, play this game.

FOF (Fistful of Frags)
Free http://store.steampowered.com/app/265630/

Fully and completely free first person shooter set in the old west. Uses the Source Engine (Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Global Offensive, etc). Has a variety of guns, dynamite, and other weapons, and plenty of whiskey to drink. This is a solid multiplayer game with unique mechanics that are fun to master. Despite being free, the devs still update it frequently and consistently. This game doesn't take itself too seriously, which is refreshing.

If you like oldschool gunfighting with people online, drinking whiskey to survive, and not spending a dime, play this game.

General Discussion / Proposal: VillageCraft Outlands Update
« on: 9 October 2015, 01:34:57 PM »
VillageCraft Outlands Update

Hey there,

We'd like to propose an update to VillageCraft that makes the Outlands a bit more adventure-like. This is intended to make the Outlands more challenging and more worthwhile, and makes owning a Village a little more rewarding. Alongside this, there will be new custom items with special attributes for players to use, as well as a loot system where you are rewarded with items for killing things. We want to give fair warning and then let everyone beta test this update on the server for a few weeks, so you can give us your feedback.

How we'd like to do this:

1. Change where you can teleport from:
   > Teleporting while in the Outlands is blocked (unless you have a Scroll of Town Portal).
   > Teleporting while in a village is still fully possible and has not changed at all.

2. Add a special item:
   > A Scroll of Town Portal (STP) is found from killing mobs, and can be used to teleport from anywhere in the Outlands.
   > The Scrolls of Town Portal come in 7 tiers, where I is the worst and VII is the best; players can trade and sell them freely.

3. Add a loot system:
   > Killing mobs now has a chance to drop a variety of items, far beyond what Minecraft normally offers, making the Outlands more worthwhile.
   > The loot system, called RandomDrops, is fully customizable so we can tailor the loot on VillageCraft as time goes on into something well-balanced and interesting.

So,
We would do this by adding 3 new custom plugins that will be exclusive to VillageCraft. Each plugin is designed so that they can work hand-in-hand with eachother to make the server a more interesting place. You can read about them below.

VillageCraft is a unique server, and we'd like to make the experience of venturing between Villages and into the Outlands a little bit more distinct. More of an adventure. A journey. A little tougher, but with loot rewards for doing it. Using a Scroll of Town Portal will still get you back to safety, but it puts emphasis on the fact that you are indeed out in the wild; the scroll is just another tool in your kit.

The scrolls will become a new piece of gear for venturing around the server - you can buy/sell/trade them to other players freely, you can find them popping out of the dead corpses of evil creatures, and you can use them at your will with a quick command or the click of your mouse. Without one, you'll be playing the game of survival (isn't that what Minecraft is all about?). And don't worry: You can still teleport from within any village as per usual, even to a friend who is in the Outlands.

Try it out in the beta and let us know what you think!

-------

Update Log - VillageCraft Outlands Update
Adds 3 custom plugins: "Outlands", "RandomDrops", & "Scroll of Town Portal".

Outlands Plugin:
> Block teleporting while not in a village.
   > Exceptions: Players who use a Scroll of Town Portal, Ops, anyone with exemption permission (vcmod.outlands.exempt).

RandomDrops Plugin:
> When you kill a mob, random items will drop as loot 10% of the time.
> The actual chance for a specific item to drop is relative, based on how many items are in the RandomDrops database and all of their 'drop chance weights'.
   > All items have a configurable drop chance weight from between 1 - 32,000.
   > The RandomDrops database can be changed over time to make the loot balanced and fun.

Scroll of Town Portal Plugin:
> Adds Scroll of Town Portal (STP) items that can be used to teleport out of the Outlands.
   > There are 7 tiers of scrolls with I being the worst and VII being the best.
   > Teleports you to Qualia.
> Right clicking on a scroll activates it and teleports you.
   > Typing "/stp!" will execute the best scroll in your inventory.
   > Typing "/stp" will execute the worst scroll in your inventory.
> Scrolls will override the Outlands plugin, thus you can teleport while in the Outlands at any time by using a Scroll of Town Portal.

Off-Topic Discussion / Water on Mars
« on: 28 September 2015, 01:08:00 PM »
NASA just made a major announcement that years of research by the landers, rovers, and especially by the orbiters suggest that there is liquid water on Mars.

While there is likely fresh water on Mars as well, especially near the poles, this announcement relates to salt water in several places elsewhere on Mars, mostly around hills and mountains where they can see it flowing down and then evaporating. The water is a brine with perchlorate salts, which are very water-soluble. The fact that it is salty means it can survive in a liquid form from -70 to about 25 Celsius, rather than from 0 to 100 Celsius on Earth. Fresh water is much less stable in a liquid form on Mars because the current atmosphere is thin, and is only able to stay liquid from about 0 to 10 Celsius.

The Mars rovers and landers have discovered that Mars is actually quite wet; there is a lot of moisture in the soil and a lot more humidity in the air than we thought there was before visiting the planet in depth. At night, the atmosphere cools and sometimes results in ice crystals actually forming on the Curiosity Rover. Along with the heating and cooling of the humid air, the seasonal water flows down Mars's hills show that the planet has an active hydrological cycle.

The applications of this news is that:
1. Mars is habitable for water-based life, including humans who visit the planet (which will be happening soon, likely in the 2020's), who could use the water to make breathable air, drinkable water, and liquid rocket fuel as well as solid booster fuel.
2. Mars probably has life (but we just don't know for sure yet!). It might be microbial, and it might mostly live under the surface, but it's looking more and more likely that life can easily be supported as all the basic ingredients to support it are there, and considering Mars's Earth-like past, it's very possible the planet is alive with some very old life. It's possible Mars's theoretical life came from Earth rocks with living microbes, it's possible Earth's life came from ancient Mars rocks with living microbes, and it's possible both planets independently had life start upon them.
3. We now know where to visit when we next go to Mars. Where do we look for the life? Near the water. Mars 2020 is the next scheduled rover mission, and will specifically aim to look for life in the wet areas of Mars.

If you'd like to know how I know this, go watch the NASATV press broadcast that just happened minutes ago today. Here is a sample if you don't want to watch the whole thing:

General Discussion / Die_Endermen for Queen of VC
« on: 1 April 2015, 03:13:06 PM »
Many people have been coming to us asking for us to make a monarchy on VC, and most of those people probably want Die to be the Queen.

The Queen is a new rank that will have the same powers as Admins, including ban and all that. Unlike staff who can't really interfere in private towns, the Queen can add herself as owner to any town and remove the other owners if she feels it is worthwhile to do so.

Die is often on the server and would naturally be the best person for the role.

Please leave your thoughts, whatever they might be, and vote responsibly.

Villages of VillageCraft
VillageCraft provides player ownership over regions called villages.

We try to keep our rules simple, and most of the information below is already obvious, but some of it isn't obvious, so it's worth reading and understanding.
The following are the rules and guidelines for how villages are handled on the server:

CLAIMING LAND in the OUTLANDS
1. Anywhere that isn't in a village is the "Outlands". This is where you can start building a village.
2. Simply starting to build a village in the Outlands establishes a land claim.
3. Since anyone can build in the Outlands, your village can be griefed while it is still unprotected, however VC Staff can rollback the grief and punish the griefer.
4.  (NEW! - 5 Feb 2022) It is suggested you build 200m away from existing villages, unless you have owner consent to be closer, to comply with Village Tiers requirements.

PROTECTING A VILLAGE
1. Protection makes your village official. You own it and can start adding members and making rules.
2. VC Staff protects villages with WorldGuard regions, and there 3 basic requirements:
    - At least 5 structures (or 1 very substantial structure like a castle)
    - A design with style and effort put into it (this is at staff discretion - we won't allow cobble/dirt cubes to pass as a structure)
    - $5,000 service, paid to the staff member (Admin or SuperModerator) who protects the village for you.

EXPANDING A VILLAGE
1. Expansion makes the physical protected village region larger, and has only one minor requirement:
    - Convince a VC Staff member why you need the expansion (you have buildings that are currently not in the region that need protection, or you intend to build out further and want it protected before you do).
    - (NEW! - 5 Feb 2022) Make sure your Village Tier allows for expansion, and how much it allows for.
    - $0 service, expansion is free.

VILLAGE OWNERSHIP
1. Villages are owned by whoever is listed as an owner in "/region info". The VC Staff do not have any ownership rights over your village - you own it.
2. Any owner can add another owner, just be aware that you now jointly own the village equally. Be careful who you add as an owner.
3. Owners are responsible for their village, can create village rules, manage how land is used, and manage who is a member.
4. Only VC Staff members can remove an owner, which the other owners much convince staff to do, usually by a vote among owners.
5. (NEW! - 5 Feb 2022) Village owners who go inactive may have an extended inactivity leeway, depending on the Village Tier, which can prevent them from losing ownership for longer than the usual 2 months.

VILLAGE MEMBERSHIP
1. Village owners can add and remove members at will.
2. Should there be no active owners of a village:
    - Any active members may determine how to fill the vacancy.
    - If no method is agreed upon, a democratic majority of active members can choose which member(s) will become the new owner(s), and then ask VC Staff to make the changes.
    - If a non-member wants to own the village, they need consent from all active members.

INACTIVE VILLAGES
1. If a village has no active owners or members, it can be purchased by anyone from a VC Staff member. The selling price is up to the buyer and Staff to negotiate.
2. In some cases, Staff may simply remove protection from old unsubstantial villages or decide to preserve outstanding villages as public property.

VILLAGE RULES
1. These are up to the owner(s) to determine, must be available for all members to read, and anyone in the village must be given the opportunity to read them when they join or when the rules are changed.
2. Villages are still under VillageCraft's rules: http://www.villagecraft-server.com/forum/index.php?topic=3898.0

VILLAGE UNIONS Old thread: http://www.villagecraft-server.com/forum/index.php?topic=3434.0
See below:

-------

Village Unions on VC
- Unions are where a power structure is created to govern multiple villages (regions). Federations and confederations are examples of this.

- Unions can have a large "Union Land" region that encompasses the constituent sub-village regions and the land in between them (federal land), within reason.

- Not a union: Expanding a village by adding another region to it (as parent/child regions) is not considered creating a union.

1. Constitution:
   a. Must have a constitution.
   b. Must be clear and accessible to anyone.
   c. At a minimum must include:
       i. - Name of the union,
ii. - The power structure of the union (who is in charge? is it a democracy? etc),
iii. - How union land is handled (who makes decisions about federal land that is in the union's protected region, but isn't in any one sub-village's region?),
iv. - How to join and leave the union,
       v. - How to change the constitution.

2. Joining a union requires:
   a. All owners of the village that is joining to give consent to join under the constitution.
   b. The union to provide consent for the village to join (however the constitution makes this happen).

3. Paying for protection and perks:
   a. The union region and each sub-village region must pay for protection and perks individually (mob repellant, for example, is not shared).

We have a few of these on VC, and more keep popping up, so we're making some basic guidelines to make it easier when it comes to staff protecting regions and dealing with questions/disagreements:

« on: 8 March 2015, 07:41:42 PM »
Like a village on the Overworld, the Moon has moonbases.

These requirements might change a bit after beta, based on what our testers think, but here they are:

----------------------

1. Airlock (2 Piston-sealed doors)
Airtight (at least 1 section/structure with airtight materials)

2. Communications Station

3. Power Generation: Reactor, Solarpanels, Generator, etc (at least 1)
   + Fuel/Coolant Storage

4. Oxygen Recycler
   + Storage

5. Nitrogen Oxidizer

6. Water Purifier
   + Storage

7. $5,000

-------

Get creative! It's largely up to you on how you make these requirements look and work :)

Post feedback as you see fit.

-The VillageCraft Staff

General Discussion / Tickets to The Moon! (Beta Access)
« on: 20 February 2015, 02:58:33 AM »
UPDATE - Moon Launch This Weekend (March 7/8)!

Early Tickets To The Moon:
We are now selling tickets to The Moon. This is limited beta access and the people who visit The Moon during this time will help us make sure everything is working properly for when it goes fully public. The Moon beta access will open this weekend.

There are exactly 27 tickets. No more, no less. They cost $25,000. They come in the form of physical in-game books called "Boarding Pass". Each Boarding Pass gets you unlimited access to Starship Damo, which can take you to and from The Moon for $500 a flight. Each Boarding Pass book is numbered and expires once beta access ends. You can, however, keep the numbered Boarding Pass book forever after it expires, if that interests you.

There will be other ways to get to the moon once it is public, and if you'd prefer to wait for a different price scheme, that's up to you.

If you want a ticket, ask Ako or Noket in-game!

Walking On The Moon:
The Moon is a harsh environment. There is a unique challenge to it. There are aliens which early access players will see first, and there is oxygen you need to worry about.

You need to wear an oxygenated Space Helmet, which can be purchased on The Moon. There is also a recommended (yet optional) full space suit which provides important vital information such as your oxygen level, and warns you if there's a leak in your suit. You can bring your own set of armour if you like, but you'll need to buy Space Helmets regardless, so forget bringing a helmet.

There are airlocked areas with pressurization that you can breathe in without any armour on, such as in starships and in Imbrium Public Moonbase. You'll also be able to build moonbases much like villages, and have airlocks so you can breathe without a suit in your own base. The requirements for those will be posted soon.

Lastly, The Moon has different stuff infused into the ground, so mining will be different than you're used to.

Again, if you're interested in being one of the first people on The Moon, grab $25,000, and buy one of the 27 tickets!

See you on The Moon!

PS: Jetpacks.

Sidenote: People who own Kerbal Space Program, our KSP server is now online! http://www.villagecraft-server.com/forum/index.php?board=25.0

General Discussion / Please don't change your username

There's problems with doing it. Not all plugins will know who you are anymore. It's really not a well implemented system.
You might not be able to access any of your chests. And let me tell you. Staff are not going to manually break thousands of locks because of this poorly thought out idea from Mojang.

We still need to figure out what players need to take care of in-game before they change their name, so it's worth WAITING if it's something you want to do.
