Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Milk
« on: 23 August 2021, 09:10:56 PM »
So there's a conundrum here.

The cockroach milk is concerning because cockroaches are strange and disgusting creatures, and I'm finding myself untrustworthy as to whether their milk is particularly sanitary. But... it's cold. Glorious cold milk. Milk should be served cold. Cold milk is delicious milk.

Then there's the seahorse. Male seahorses birth their young... so does that make them the milk-givers too? Are we drinking male seahorse milk? Do seahorses produce "milk?" Do cockroaches!? Assuming both do, in some fashion, seahorse milk seems safer to me. They are fish things, and humans eat food from the sea frequently, so nothing can possibly go wrong. It's the obvious milk choice. Except... the seahorse milk is warm. Ew, gross.

Cold cockroach milk wins.

This has received Staff Consent and can move on.

There's just 1 note regarding grammar and clarity since it's potentially unclear if this section requires 7 or 8 people:

Under 2 months served: 7 players; 1 Staff Member
should say:
Under 2 months served: 7 players and 1 Staff Member
or
Under 2 months served: 7 players, including 1 Staff Member

If people like what they've built, but don't finish, I don't think it's much of a big deal that we let them keep going beyond the 1 day one way or another, even if the "build comp" is over. We can move it or something if needed.

Oh and, I'll try to join for a bit

better naomi (aka taco) (aka naomi 2.0) i was recently taking a stroll in tilgangur and found a wretched sight. a poor bee tied to a fence. big sad. this beautiful creature was trying to be free, but because of the injustices of whoever could be so HEARTLESS AND CRUEL to do such a thing.... (most likely naomi 1.0) but the reason naomi 2.0 is typing this with her sprained wrists is because i would like to set this incredible bee free. it deserves to live. not to be tied to a fence wasting its life away. please. gather up some love and compassion in yalls small hearts. set the bee free.

thank you.

VillageCraft has changed a lot over the years, and with the recent feedback from many players in our community, we are making an effort to get back to our roots.

VillageCraft is about villages, so starting today we are announcing the long-awaited removal of global chat and moving everyone into local chat! Everyone being in local chat will foster a sense of community in every one of our cherished villages! We are so excited to finally follow through on this popular community request, and we know you are all excited too!

Say goodbye to global chat which has divided us for years, and give a warm welcome to local chat for all!
Thank you for repeatedly requesting this change, and you're so very welcome for finally implementing it.

Enjoy local, and thank you everyone for all the years of support!
~The VillageCraft Staff

Reminder that this list closes on Tuesday the 6th of April 2021 at Noon (Toronto-NY-Montreal time)!

Parliament Vote #30:
Senate Guidelines Revision #1

With the passing of this legislation, the following will occur:
The revisions to the Senate of VillageCraft Official Guidelines stated below will be adopted.

-------
FULL TEXT HERE: https://gitlab.com/luisc99/legislation-changes/-/commit/c98e45266bac820bba6106a0b795d30092fecda7
The new text in the above link is what will be adopted. The link includes the full text of the revisions, side-by-side with the old text for comparison.

CHANGE LIST:
-States that the Senate is a body of the Parliament (there has been some confusion over this)
-Clears up votes with regards to investigations of Staff (there was some confusion over this a few months ago)
-Clears up terms and adds some terms, such as "Selection Event" to make things easier to follow
-Clears up some ambiguity about resignations, and the removal of the CM (who can still be eligible for selection)
-Adds a section "C.5: Sortition" to explain sortition in one spot
-Adds language to officially adopt the publicly-auditable and viewable Sortition Method and randomized daily Selection Lists developed by Ako and Luis
-Adds language to make sure orders to fill seat vacancies occur the following day (UTC) so no strategy/"cheating"  with selecting new Senators can occur
-Closes the "Upcoming Sortition List" 24 hours before the new session to give buffer time for the new list to be updated for the new Senate to be selected
-States that orders to fill vacant seats may not occur within the last 72 hours of a Senate Session (to sync with the above 24 hour buffer, and also because it would be odd)
-Places a (soft) limit of a maximum of 3 Staff members on the Senate, to avoid Staff dominance. Technically adding a player to the Staff who is a Senator can exceed this limit, but this is the only way.
-Requires the CM to choose whether to accept a Senate seat 1-10 days PRIOR to the start of a Senate Session, now removing their ability to slightly delay a session by not deciding.
-Makes it clear that Senate Votes last 5 days or until all Senators have voted, at the Speaker's discretion (there was some confusion about this)
-Makes it clear that System Admins are counted as 1 of the 3 staff required for consent (there was a question recently whether it was 3+1 admin or whether the admin counted)
-------

This vote has been brought to Parliament by the passing of Senate Vote #6 - https://bit.ly/3w5HN8n
Discussion took place on Discord in #senate

This vote was initiated by senate nominations from Speaker Legend and Senator Allison

If "no" is majority, the revisions will not be added.

All Members of Parliament may vote.
For the act to pass, a majority of voting MPs must vote in favor.

If you are indifferent, please abstain.

General Discussion / Re: The Maybe Final Case
« on: 4 March 2021, 01:45:21 PM »
I'll just say that I don't know what the bounds of that friend group are. I don't know who is included or excluded, but I can say complaints about octo have been given to me from outside of what I'd generally consider that friend group. They generally request anonymity, fortunately or unfortunately, so I can't really say anything further than that, you'll just have to take my word for it. This is totally regardless of the arguments and opinions expressed in this post, I'm just adding information.

Regarding the sentiment of the arguments and opinions expressed: I have seen hostile, aggressive, difficult, temperamental, unhelpful, and hateful behaviours from Octo plenty of times. Anyone who has played enough in the last 2 years or so is likely aware of it; Octo himself was of course quite aware of it when it got to its worst level and took a leave. I know that multiple players severely reduced playtime or left the server to avoid him, some of them dealing with their own mental health problems that they felt were being exacerbated by his conduct, and some of them just wanting to avoid a staff member who they felt was looking to pick a fight.

With that said, VillageCraft has always been a server that has tried to show empathy to people and recognize their abilities to grow and improve. I think and hope Octo can be one of those people. Lately it seems he's been pretty cool and chill online (correct me if I'm wrong?), so that's hopeful. I've found myself wondering how to balance the line between Octo going thru a hard time, taking it out on players, and having a pretty negative impact on the server, and; Octo's many years here, all his help, and of course his ability to improve and be the good human that I know he's capable of being. He's a friend who I care about and I would much rather see him given the chance to improve, but I've admittedly been incredibly torn on whether he should be doing that as a Staff member given how aware I am of how hostile he has been with people, and how they've taken it, and whether or not being Staff on VC was helpful or harmful to him as a whole (I don't know).

I don't know if many of the arguments here, in a second thread about this, were particularly convincing, but I understand the sentiment. I hope we can all improve together. At the end of the day, we're here playing games, building, and chatting. I'm pretty sure we can all collectively keep VC a good place to do that. I hope we can all get along better. We'll see, eh?

General Discussion / Re: Why is Octo Staff?
« on: 18 February 2021, 03:05:22 PM »
With a bit of quiet on this thread now, I'm going to address the spirit of what is behind Gerrit's post, rather than the specific content. The following is not a weighing of the merits or faults of Octo, but rather me trying to express a feeling within the VC community that the Staff have the responsibility to hear and consider.

I am in a unique position in that I receive a lot of the private questions, complaints, and concerns from players about the Staff directly. To put it simply, the disapproval Gerrit is expressing over Octo's conduct as a VC staff member is not rare. There are complaints about his conduct from all over the playerbase. These complaints span many months, perhaps a couple years.

There is more than a strong distaste in many people's mouths over their relations with Octo and his place as a Staff member. Octo himself in the past has been self-aware that his own hyper-negativity was being taken out on the server and its players to the point that he was certainly harming many people's experiences on the server. In fact, several players have outright left. So it's no secret or surprise to me that I have received numerous complaints about Octo and his capacity to be a negative force on the server. In the eyes of many players, Octo's conduct as a Staff member can be anywhere from difficult to adversarial to downright hostile.

I think this is the spirit of the post. I worry that the spirit of the post isn't being adequately addressed or considered by the Staff, which is the whole reason this post exists in the first place; despite numerous complaints, widespread unease with Octo, and people trying to bring this up publicly in a calmer tone, it feels as though Staff are failing to address the grievances of the players. I know this is how many people feel because they've been contacting me privately, frequently. In their eyes, this is harming how players see the Staff, trust the Staff, whether they feel comfortable going to Staff with their problems, and is deteriorating the general player-to-Staff relations as a whole.

This leads to another point to consider; people are afraid to come forward with their grievances. They are afraid because they think the Staff will gang up on them, belittle them, and then hold a grudge against them and they will have a significantly harder time getting help when they require Staff assistance.

So, a thread like this may come across as distasteful (at least the opening post), but it is probably the natural evolution of a collective set of grievances that have been building up over time, and have gone largely unresolved. To me it is unsurprising, but to a Staff member who perhaps didn't realize how many complaints I/we receive or don't frequently interact with the playerbase to have knowledge of this common sentiment, this might be news. I think the Staff should carefully consider how they address this common grievance. Rather than belittle it, undermine it, or in some way try to ignore it, we should do our best to address it. I know this thread started out provocatively and unprofessionally, but consider that it was intended to get our attention after repeated calmer attempts have failed.

We need to address the spirit of what is behind this post, because let me tell you the complaints I am receiving privately right now are showing me that all eyes are on the Staff, and it isn't looking good for player-Staff relations. Our response to this is being considered widely. We are taking a beating, and many people are too afraid to say it publicly. So, I am saying it for them.

Please consider this.

I frequently see sad souls in chat who just died and realized how much XP they lost lol. Bottled XP would, among other things, be a nice quality of life improvement for players like those.
