General Discussion / Twenty
« on: 20 January 2024, 12:01:29 PM »
You might want to grab yourself a hot chocolate, this post is going to be a long one. It's been a while since I've done one of these, and in fact two weeks ago marked 10 years since I first wrote one of these threads. Let me think, what's a good excuse for it taking so long? I watched the new series of Bake Off, moved into a new flat, bought a new computer, got two degrees, almost sent something to space - just a couple of little things. But they're not important, let's get to the exciting news!

VillageCraft is now running Minecraft 1.20.4!

On a serious note to start with, I'd like to make a quick apology about taking so long for this. In the 4(!) major updates to the game since VC last updated, Mojang made some very serious changes to the game, including expanding the world, recoding a bunch of internal game mechanics, and switching to a new scheme where they seem to make a bunch of breaking changes on the 0.00.x "minor" patches. Each of those were difficult to deal with, and each update that came out made the process harder still. VillageCraft is twelve years old now, updating a server with this much history and this much complexity is hard, and I'll always prioritise safety and security when updating to make sure as much as possible continues to work correctly, without anything breaking. But now we're running the very latest Minecraft version once again, and with (hopefully) most of the major changes out of the way, it should be a lot easier to keep up with things. There's only one major change that I sense is on the horizon that could delay an update this significantly again, and it's a feature I've been wanting for close to a decade, so quite frankly I'm looking forward to re-coding everything if that happens.

For 1.20, a few of our essential core plugins once again broke, so I've continued the tradition of taking them under my wing and re-coding them. In fact, this update has ended up with me doing more coding than all my previous plugins combined. I've written over 32000(!) lines of code (that's what GitHub claims anyway), including making a couple of pull requests to Paper to change the core server API in order to get some of our plugins working, and with 17 (I think?) entirely new plugins, there's no shortage of changes this time around. I've taken this opportunity to clean things up and make it more flexible, and I'm excited to be back into the full swing of coding up brand-new things to make VC even more awesome. As of this update, VC has 45% of its plugins entirely custom-coded specifically for it. And with Minecraft making the leap from Java 8 to Java 17 (and soon to Java 21), developing is quite a different experience given there's a decade of new language features to use and abuse.

But enough about that, here's what's new on VillageCraft right now!

Minecraft 1.17, 1.18, 1.19, and 1.20! With four major versions in this update, there's a whole plethora of brand-new content from Vanilla just waiting to be explored. The world has expanded to include another 64 blocks below bedrock, and 64 blocks in the sky, and all your villages should have automatically updated to protect this additional space (let us know if not and we'll fix it). There's brand-new biomes, many mobs, scary wardens, bright berries, ancient archeology, awesome axolotls, adorable allays, horny goats, chests with boats, cosy candles, friendly frogs, and more new blocks than I can remember, to name but a few changes. Go forth, explore, and enjoy!

First up, following the votes in both Parliament and the Senate, now only 50% of players need to sleep in order to skip the night. This is something I know has been annoying for a while, and after trialling a similar system on VillageCraft Vanilla a while back, I'm happy it'll be a good change on VillageCraft.

I've also added the Mojang-approved recipe for bundles, so you can now craft an extra perk to help with inventory management. Having used them on VCV quite a bit, they're super useful for collecting different items when exploring the new world.

The resource pack is now compulsory, as its use will be expanded more and more to take advantage of the new opportunities it presents. Thanks to some changes Mojang have made to the game, it should now load faster and fully apply before you join the server, and I've made some changes to how it gets compiled, so now the pack is smaller than it was before the update. Even with all the additions I've made, it'll be even quicker to download and update. As always, the resource pack will never change anything from vanilla, so you can use it alongside any other packs you have without interference. Your game should automatically download any updates as they happen, but as always, if there's any problems, let me know and I'll try and work out a fix for it.

Voting rewards have been updated to include new items from across the past four versions of Minecraft, including the full range of goat horns, and armour trims at the highest tier level. As always, you can upgrade your reward bags by combining nine of them in a crafting table to move up a tier. Due to some internal changes Mojang's made it's possible any old ones you have stored up won't stack or combine in the crafting table anymore - if that's the case and you want to keep them, let a member of staff know and they can swap them out for a new one for you, free of charge.

With all the new blocks added across the updates, I'm happy to say there are now 65 brand-new microblocks representing the additions from the updates, which will join the rotation of random microblocks available in the store on the Qualia seafront. And as before, all microblocks are available via the wandering trader. On that note, the wandering trader now sells items from the new biomes, including the new types of woods, loot from the deep dark, and a new pool of items from that wandering trader who got stuck in the new caves and wants to sell you all his ores. The default trades are pretty bad, so I'm happy to say on VC they're hopefully slightly less useless of a mob.

We've also renamed the stonecutter to the Cutting Table, and expanded what you can do with it. You can now cut wood, including getting all the nice one-to-one conversion ratios for items that you could normally only get with stones before. This includes stairs, trapdoors, signs, fences, and other wooden items. It works for all woods (including the Nether ones and bamboo), and you can jump from logs directly to individual items. Not only that, but the Cutting Table can now be used to craft microblocks! Just place any block into the Cutting Table, and if there's a microblock version of it available, you'll be able to craft 8 of them directly! No longer do you have to trade with a wandering trader or wait for them to show up in the microblock shop, so decorate to your heart's content with the cute little blocks!

On top of that, you can now click on any item frame with a glow ink sac, and it'll change it into a glow item frame in-place, so you don't have to break and replace them all. I've also made it so if you click on an item frame with a feather, it'll stop showing the name of the item inside it if it's been renamed, so you have the option for that cleaner look. And finally, to top off the item frame changes, if you click on one with a golden carrot, it'll make it invisible, so only the item will be shown! When you remove an item, the frame will be shown again so you can always see it, but it remembers it should be invisible, so next time you put something in there it'll hide itself again automatically.

A very tiny but useful thing, if you're walking on top of a path block now, you'll get 2.5s of Speed I, to help you traverse around that little bit quicker. It's a change I've found useful when testing, but I'm happy to remove it if you find it annoying.

The Mob Catcher plugin has been entirely re-written from scratch, and in doing so I've made it a lot more resilient to breaking again in the future. Now eggs can be crafted using a chicken egg in the four corners, an iron ingot on the four edges, and then either a copper block, gold block, or emerald block in the middle. The three tiers (in that order) have a 33%, 67%, or 100% chance of catching a mob, and each attempt costs $500, $1500, or $2500 respectively. You throw them like a snowball, if they hit a mob that can be caught, it'll try and catch it, and drop a mob egg if so. There's a couple of mobs you can't catch, for obvious reasons. I've not yet had time to backport old mob eggs to the new format, so if you've got mobs caught already, please keep them in their eggs for the time being until I can make them releasable!

I've also re-coded the mob heads plugin, to add heads for every single mob, and all their variants. Kill a green sheep? You'll get a green sheep's head! Most mobs have a 2.5% chance to drop a head, which increases by 1% per level of looting, which is the same scale as Wither Skeleton heads. I've made some rarer mobs a bit more common though. Every single mob head will also play the corresponding mob's sound when placed on top of a note block, including some slight variations for some mob types, such as the head of a sneezing panda making a sneezing sound. In addition, players will now drop a head every time they're killed by someone else, and the head will include details of who killed them, and when it was, so you can keep them as a little trophy. Again, these will play a fun little sound when placed on a note block.

After far too long trying to figure it out, I'm very happy to say that all player heads, mob heads, custom skulls, and microblocks, will now keep their name when they're placed and broken, so everything will stack properly when you're placing and replacing them. This will only apply to new heads placed from now on, so any existing heads you have may be a little weird, just because of some changes Mojang made to them.

We're also introducing a brand new currency in the form of Gems, which are designed to reward actual playing rather than the slightly skewed economy we've built up over the last 12 years. For every 15 minutes you are on the server (and not AFK!), you'll be granted 1 gem automatically. You can check how many gems you have at any time by doing /gems. Gems cannot be traded between players, and cannot be exchanged for regular VC dollars, so the only way to get them is to play on the server. Aside from the standard time-based system of getting gems, they can be obtained through interacting with the server in various ways, either as prizes from events, loot from minigames, or rewards for getting advancements. But the question I hear you asking is, what's the point of this new currency?

Well, joining Hughbert as a visitor of Qualia, I'm happy to introduce to you Toni the traveller, who you can find in Qualia Outskirts every Thursday, at the same times as Hughbert visits on Tuesday (18:00 - 06:00 UTC). Toni is a unique addition to the market, as they sell items you can normally only get by exploring, which on a server as old as ours, are usually items that are hard to find without travelling millions of blocks. Toni sells three different items each week, each of which will have a different starting price depending on the rarity of the item, but the price increases by 10% every purchase, and you're limited to one per player. These numbers might change over time depending on feedback, but hopefully this is a good balance between making sure the harder-to-get items remain hard, but still accessible to people who've put a reasonable amount of time into the server without needing to fly around forever looking for chests people have already looted. Toni does a lot of travelling into weird and wonderful places, and they're happy to bring it all to you each Thursday evening, so be sure to pay them a visit!

Speaking of Hughbert, I'm also happy to say he now has brand new hats in his rotation, which will be randomly showing up every Tuesday like normal, so be sure to pay him a visit every week to see what hats are up for grabs, and to claim one for yourself. All the old ones are still in the mix and will continue to show up randomly, so don't worry if there's any you've missed. There's also been some changes to the /hats GUI to expand its functionality. First up, the colour change options will only show up if the hat you're wearing can be coloured. There's two new colour buttons, to randomise the colour, or to reset it to your personal default colour. On the right, there's a new button to randomise your hat (including colour if possible) so it's easy to find one you like. Finally, certain hats can now have different styles, and some of the existing hats have been grouped up into the new styles. Different styles are considered as the same hat, so unlocking one will unlock all styles for you automatically.

And the fun doesn't stop there, there's yet another visitor in Qualia, as every Saturday evening, you'll find Kay on the stage in the record store, who will be happy to perform a new song every week to add to your collection. The Minecraft music is really underrated, so I'm happy to announce now you can any song from the game, not just the music discs, in the form of a cassette (remember those kids?) which you can play on any jukebox anywhere in the world, just place a block of amethyst below a jukebox and click on it. With the ability to loop tracks, it's a great way to enjoy the game's soundtrack.

I think they're the only people who visit Qualia, but I feel like I'm forgetting someone... Can't think who though, so can't be too important. Especially not on Wednesdays, why would you even suggest that?

Moving on to some changes with how chat works. Firstly, almost everything has now been converted to using modern game mechanics behind the scenes, including the use of channels. Now, you can hover over someone's nickname on any chat message, from any channel, and see their full in-game username, as well as their UUID, how long they have played on VillageCraft (since January 2014), if they're a new player, and a brief summary of any important tags they have. It's just a nice convenient, easy-to-use, yet unobtrusive way of getting some more context about someone.

Also, for the first time, Discord is now treated as a channel in-game. This means if you've chosen to /ignore anyone, their Discord messages will also be hidden, completely automatically, finally fulfilling Parliament vote #32. There's no extra commands to remember, and already includes everyone you've ignored in the past. To find out who someone is from Discord, just like regular chat, you can hover over their name and see basic information like their Minecraft username, even if they're not online. Oh, and also Discord messages are now tinted a subtle purple, to differentiate them from normal chat.

In addition, you can now choose to completely ignore all messages from Discord if you wish. Through the new /chat command, you can show or hide entire channels at once, so any messages from them can be hidden. Through this command, you can disable listening to messages from local chat, as well as, for the first time ever, completely disable global chat. Hopefully this will make it a bit easier for you to choose which messages you want to see, and make it a little less chaotic when the server is busy,

On top of that, tips are now in smooth VC purple, so they're a bit less jarring on the eyes. They've been made less frequent, and the list of tips has been revamped, to remove some of the out-of-date ones, clean up some of the silly ones that haven't aged well, and added some more useful ones that give info about things you might not know. Tips are also treated as a channel, and you can use /chat to completely disable showing tips if you wish. However, critical information, messages, and news will always be shown, so you'll never miss anything important.

It's not just text chat that's had a revamp either. With this update, I'm happy to announce that VillageCraft now supports the Simple Voice Chat mod! This is an optional client-side mod, which introduces positional voice chat directly in the game, without needing to use things such as Discord. Once you've got the mod installed, you'll automatically hear people around you, and they'll fade away as they move around. As always, we'll never require anyone to install mods to play on VillageCraft, so you are completely free to never use this feature, but it's there if anyone wants it. A couple of things in the future will hook into voice chat, to add additional features for anyone who chooses to use it. Oh, and one thing I forgot, if you're using this on a group adventure to an ancient city, maybe try not to shout too much. Wouldn't want to wake up any wardens now would we?

You can download Simple Voice Chat here - it'll require installing Fabric, which is a nice, lightweight mod loader for modern Minecraft. If you've never modded the game before, I've put together a MultiMC instance you can import, which will have the mod installed already. Simply download MultiMC from their website, fire it up, click "Add Instance" in the top left, click "Import from zip", and copy and paste in this url. If you're more comfortable using the vanilla launcher you can also manually install the mod yourself, although note due to microphone permissions issues if you're using macOS the mod will only work via MultiMC.

I mentioned some of our oldest plugins breaking earlier on, and one of those unfortunately was Lockette, which is what is used to lock chests so people can't steal from them. As this is obviously quite an important plugin to have, it took quite a long time to get working, however it has been replaced with a new, modern version of the plugin, which I'm keen to work with the developer to fix any bugs that may occur. The first time you see a chest with a lock on it, the signs will look a little weird, however when you (or anyone) tries to open it, they'll convert over to the new format. One effect of the new plugin is now only the owner is shown on the chest, and you can add as many additional members as you like by clicking on the sign and doing /lock addmember [user]. Changing a plugin as important as this in this way isn't something I'm particularly happy about, and I'm quite hesitant to update the server right now given it, but people keep asking for 1.20 so I'm taking the risk it'll be okay. If there's any problems, let a member of staff know and we'll fix it for you. Sorry about this, and if you see any problems at all, please do let me know so I can work to get them resolved. If anyone is caught exploiting these problems to steal from chests or open doors they do not have access to, they will be given a 30-day ban, no exceptions.

Now, I've been teasing something on Discord for a while, and you've all thought it's me just teasing the update itself. But no, alongside this update, I'm very proud to announce the grand opening of a new minigame - The Dungeon. This is something I've been planning for a few years now, and thanks to help from the wonderful Dallas and Myst, it's finally become a reality. The Dungeon is a solo competitive minigame, focused around strategy, in which you are given a compass and must find where it is pointing to in a dungeon filled with dangerous things. There's loot to be found, prizes to be won, and importantly a leaderboard to compete against each other over. I'll be doing a full write up of how The Dungeon works and everything you need to know to play it soon, ready in time for its grand opening weekend, on the 27th of January. We'll be opening the gates at 20:00 UTC (15:00 ET) with a reduced entry price, so you can get a feel for the game for a few days, before setting the entry fee back up to its normal price alongside the release of other features down the line. The Dungeon uses some of the new features from the update, as well as using the resource pack in ways we've never done before to add brand new content to the game. This is something I've very much been looking forward to playing myself. I've spent hours inside the dungeon testing it while coding it all, and it really is a genuinely fun and anxiety-inducing game. There's plenty of secrets hidden throughout, achievements to be discovered, and three whole levels of places to explore, and I'm looking forward to seeing you all enjoy it as much as I have.

It's worth mentioning, I'm using The Dungeon to trial some new features before committing to rolling them out across the whole server. One of these is a new shop mechanic, with fewer items bobbing around, less lag, and a brand-new tooltip system which shows you exactly what it is you are buying, and how much it will cost you. There'll be some more changes made to it before it comes to Qualia, or - if you hate it - it might never come to Qualia, but this is one of many things I'm looking at gradually modernising and improving over time. But please do give me feedback on it (and other changes) so I can tailor how I develop things to better match what you want. Now we're running the latest version of the game, I'm keen to do smaller, more gradual roll-outs of changes, including adding new features in between updates. Like I said, I've got a long list of ideas, I'm sure not all of them will turn out good enough to make it to VC, but there's plenty of things I'd like to try in the new year.

If you're someone who uses Optifine, the lead developer is currently going through some tough times right now, and progress on updating it to 1.20 has been slow. The Optifine team has been actively recommending people use Sodium in the meantime, which is a "competing" (I hate that word) mod aimed at improving performance. It also uses Fabric, so it's super easy to install alongside Simple Voice Chat, and is specifically designed around modern versions of Minecraft to improve how the game runs. I've been using it since around 1.14, and have found it consistently better than Optifine when it comes to making the game run better. If you mainly use Optifine for shaders, there's a mod called Iris which builds on Sodium, allowing you to use any shader that you previously used with Optifine. The MultiMC bundle I linked above includes Sodium by default, and Iris can easily be added if you wish.

Unfortunately, the plugin we used to add VR support on VillageCraft has stopped working, and has not yet been updated for 1.20.4. For the time being, I've removed the plugin, but I'll keep my eye on it and will add it back in if it ever gets updated. If you're someone who has used VR via this plugin, let me know, and I'll see what I can do to get it working again.

Finally, I'd like to remind you that VillageCraft is community funded, and not cheap, so if you're enjoying the new features, and if you're financially stable enough to do so, please do consider donating to help cover the costs of running this amazing server. It's not something we like to mention too much, but your help really does go a long way to keeping VillageCraft going.

Enjoy!
Luis <3

(Oh, and of course I've added plenty of easter eggs in a whole bunch of places. Good luck finding them all!)

General Discussion / Thank you <3
« on: 7 June 2022, 02:55:52 AM »
Exactly ten years ago today, on the 7th of June 2012, I logged in to VillageCraft for the first time. I had no idea at the time what to expect.

I remember the day well. The server I occasionally played on before had shut down unexpectedly, and with the summer holidays coming up me and my good friend ChaosMushrooms were looking for somewhere new to play. I was sitting on my sofa, scrolling through the Minecraft forums looking at the huge list of servers, and for some reason VC caught my eye. I don't know why, but for some reason reading that post, I was drawn in. I sent a link to Chaos, and we agreed we'd give it a go. The server was still new then, barely six months old, yet already there was a strong community, who welcomed us with open arms, helped us find some land, and got us going. I'm happy to see that same welcoming spirit shown towards new players to this day.

In my first year, Chaos and I worked away to build Eldrin - a small-to-medium village just west of where Tirinuvik is now. Things were quite different back then: there were far fewer blocks to pick from, Qualia's market was much smaller, plugins were very different in what they could do, but despite all that, it was the same VC as it is today. The same chat, the same drama, but the same friendly community behind it all. It was around this one year mark Ako sent me and Chaos a message asking us to join staff, which for quiet little Luis was a bit of a shock to be noticed and considered for a something like that. But despite my worries, the team helped me find me feet, and I got a shiny red M before my name. Over the next few months that was joined by an S, as I got more confident with what I was doing.

For those of you not around nine years ago, there was a bit of drama involved with the guy who was doing a lot of the backend stuff when I first joined. Long story short, he did some stuff, got banned, and left Ako, Air, and a guy called Runek to clean up the mess. That worked fine, but Runek got busy with work and drifted away from VC, and after a while Air asked me to take over a lot of the behind the scenes stuff. Looking back at that now, I was way too young, still in school, with nowhere near enough experience, but I still said yes, because I wanted to help the community I'd been part of for the past 15 months. Over the next year or so, that SM tag I had morphed into an SA (thanks Catty), until the S was dropped, which is how I've been for 7-8 years or so now. Now honestly, I couldn't really care less about the tag, but it did please me greatly that at least now it was consistent with the rest of the staff team and I wasn't the odd one out anymore.

Being part of VillageCraft has changed my life in ways I could never have expected ten years ago. It's helped me meet new people, and make close friends who I trust to share some of my closest secrets with. It's helped me keep coding, which led me to find new hobbies I love. It's helped me come up with new ideas, trying things I wouldn't normally. Just last month, in an interview I talked about some of the technical skills I'd learnt through my VC, which helped me get the position. VillageCraft has helped me discover what I enjoy, what I want to do, who I am - in short, VC turned me into Luis. I'm at the point where I can no longer remember a time in my life before VillageCraft. This server, and its community, has always been there. There to talk about my life, there to share success, there to escape to when life gets tough, there to go when everything else seems to be going wrong. On the very darkest of days, VillageCraft was somewhere I could turn to, knowing its friendly community would be there to help me forget about everything else. VillageCraft was, and continues to be, a place I call home.

Managing this server has become a big part of my life. I know it doesn't always look like I'm around, and I spend far less time than I'd like in-game, but I spend more time than I dare count working on VC. I'm constantly checking Discord, browsing the forums, looking at the console, making sure everything's running okay. It's one of the first things I do when I wake up, and one of the last things I do when I go to bed. I've checked the server before jumping off a mountain in Turkey, from plazas in France, from lakes in Switzerland, and from beaches in Greece. I've changed configs from a palace in Italy, and even rebooted it from the Vatican. Very few things in my life have been as persistent as VillageCraft - at some point or another, most things have changed or moved on, but VC has been the one constant for this past decade. I treat it as a part time job, unpaid, but with the same effort I would with any other job. I do what I do because VC has an important place in my heart. It's always been there for me, and if all my efforts over the past ten years has helped make one person's day better, even just once, then it's all been worthwhile.  I do what I do to make sure VillageCraft and its community will always be there for anyone who needs it, just like it was there for me when I needed it.

Anyone who knows me will tell you I'm an introvert. I hate being noticed, I hate having people talk about me, and I hate being the centre of attention. It's why I rarely talk about what I do, because it's not about me. I don't care about credit, or praise, or thanks. I'm simply doing my job, and hopefully making your experience here a bit more enjoyable. It gives me something fun to do with my free time, and even though a lot of my ideas hit a brick wall somewhere along the development cycle, those that make it to the server make me happy. I enjoy seeing what you all create on VC, what you've built, the stories you tell, the lives you all lead. I enjoy being part of this huge family, and the weird and wonderful things it brings.

VillageCraft is all about the community. The friendships we make, the people we meet, the stories we share. Without this community, the server wouldn't be so friendly to anyone who comes across it. Without the donations over all these years, we wouldn't have been able to keep VC running. It's because of all of you, that we've been able to create this wonderful place, and keep it going for over a decade.

So, thank you. Thank you for letting me be part of this community. Thank you for welcoming me all those years ago. Thank you for making me feel at home. Thank you for listening to me. Thank you for putting up with my flaws. But most importantly, thank you for always being there.

These ten years have been amazing, and sitting there on my sofa all those years ago, I could never have imagined what it would lead to. It has been a privilege to be part of this, something I will remember as long as I live, and I wouldn't give it up for the world. I hope in another ten years time, I'll still be here typing another post about what you all mean to me. Assuming you put up with me for that long :)

Thank you <3

How to be fancy with armour stands
VillageCraft has a new plugin, which enables you to easily tweak armour stands directly in-game, to position them however you wish! This is performed using a wrench.

As one additional tweak, if your main hand is empty but you are holding something in your off hand, clicking on an armour stand will put that item in its left hand, making it possible for an armour stand to hold two items

The Wrench
The wrench is key to manipulating armour stands. It is easy to obtain, simply craft it with an iron ingot and two sticks, like a diagonal shovel, as shown below. This will also show up in your recipe book, once you have crafted it for the first time.

To change what mode the wrench is in, simply click with it in your hand. The new mode will be shown just above the hotbar, and this will also be shown in the tooltip if you hover over the wrench in your inventory, making it easy to see what mode it's in. To cycle between different modes, you can use right or left click to move forwards or backwards respectively.

There are two modes to the wrench: toggles, and scrolls. Each let you manipulate different aspects of the armour stand. There's also a third feature, which I'll get to later.

If you have accepted the VillageCraft Resource Pack, the wrench will have a custom texture, to make it stand out easily. The wrench is one of the first of many items which will be added in this way, so feel free to use our resource pack to make it all the more interesting to use! As always, the resource pack will never change anything, only ever add new things, so it will always be compatible with any other resource packs you use alongside it.

Toggles
The easiest mode to explain are the toggles. Here, you can simply right click an armour stand with the wrench to toggle a feature. These include if the arms are visible or not, if the base plate can be see, the size of the armour stand, and if its equipment is locked. The equipment lock essentially just prevents tools or armour from being replaced by clicking on the armour stand, which is handy if you want to make a statue or something similar. When toggling the equipment lock, the new status will be displayed just above the hotbar, in different colours for ease of recognition. At present, one toggle (invisibility) is limited to staff use only.

One very useful toggle is the "Toggle Name" mode. This will change whether the armour stand's name is displayed above its head. While that may seem odd, it means you are able to name an armour stand using a name tag and anvil, and use that to create "speech bubble" type things, in which the armour stand will have text displayed above it. Similar things have been done before in Qualia/Tirinuvik, however this implementation is slightly more limited, for safety and lag reasons.

Scrolls
Angles
Angles are probably the most fun mode of the wrench. They let you change any angle of any body part on the armour stand. The first angle available is "rotation", which spins the armour stand as a whole; handy if you want it to be facing a slightly different way. After this, there are a whole range of roll, pitch, and yaw controls for each of the following body parts:
- Head
- Body
- Right Arm
- Left Arm
- Right Leg
- Left Leg
With these 19 different angles, it is possible to make an armour stand take on pretty much any pose you want.

To actually change these angles, first hold the wrench in your main hand, and look an an armour stand. Then, just scroll. Right will increase the angle, left will decrease it. By default, the angle will change by 15 degrees each time, however if you are sneaking, this is reduced to 1 degree, for finer control. If you want even more fine tuning (say you have a sensitive scroll wheel like mine apparently is), you can use the two number keys either side of the wrench to move it by one step.

Translates
Translates are very similar to angles, except rather than rotating the armour stand, they move it. There are three translate modes, to move along each of the three axes. This is done in exactly the same way as rotations, simply look at an armour stand while holding the wrench, and scroll. By default, it will move by 1/4 of a block, however if you are sneaking, this will be reduced to 1/16 of a block. The plugin will prevent you from moving an armour stand into a region where you wouldn't be able to bring it back from, however it does not prevent you from putting the armour stand inside a block. This is the intended behaviour, as I know for a fact people will make some really cool things with bits poking out of blocks.

There is a slight bug which occasionally occurs if you scroll too fast where it can skip away and move onto another item. Unfortunately this appears to be a limitation of the client, and doesn't look to be solvable easily. I'll keep looking into making it smoother, but I apologise for the slight weirdness until then.

Saved Poses
The third and final fun feature of the wrench, is the ability to save a pose to it! This is really easy to do, just sneak and right click on an armour stand with a wrench, and its pose and all its toggle able features will be saved to it (its items will not be). Then, you can just sneak + left click any other armour stand, to paste the pose onto it. This can be really handy for if you want to make a few armour stands with the same pose, or if there's one you like the look of and want to modify slightly. I've even found it useful for if you just want to move an armour stand from one place to another, while keeping its pose. If you want a new pose, just sneak + right click again, and the old one will be overwritten. Poses are saved to the specific wrench, so you are free to make as many wrenches as you like with different poses saved to them, maybe even name them in an anvil to make them easy to identify. It's up to you!

Some details of the pose will be displayed in the tooltip if you hover over the wrench in your inventory, but to be honest, the numbers likely aren't *too* useful. The main reason I put that there was so it was clear there is a pose saved to the wrench. I am experimenting with different ways of displaying this info, so maybe in the future this may change to be slightly easier at first glance.

---

Hope you all enjoy this new feature, I can't wait to see what exciting things are done with it! If there's any problems, suggestions, or just things you want me to clarify, please do message me. I'm always here to help :)

Apologies for the not amazing quality of gifs, hopefully they're still alright

Reports & Grievances / Anonymous Staff Complaints Form
« on: 2 August 2021, 11:40:55 AM »
Below is a link to a form where you can post anonymous complaints about specific members of staff. Your complaints will only be visible to admins, and will be kept confidential.

Adding your username is optional, and should only be done if you want your name associated with it. If you choose to do so, this will never be shared. If you want to ensure anonymity, I'd recommend filling in the form in a private tab, where you are not logged in to the forums.

This is not the place to being up personal spats you have with people, but should be used as a place for genuine complaints about how a staff member has acted. Nobody will be removed from staff based on a single complaint, and nothing is changing about the staff addition/removal process, which will still go through the same process as it always has. If a complaint is made, it will be considered carefully, and actions considered from there. This is not a place to try and force people out of staff without genuine reason.

As ever, if you want to talk about anything at all, both Ako and I have our messages open. We'll always respect anonymity, and will always keep conversations private.

Remember that behind every name is a person with their own lives, feelings, and opinions.

Click here to open the complaints form

General Discussion / Caves and Cliffs: A Question of Updates
« on: 26 May 2021, 04:36:32 PM »
With the release of 1.17 on the horizon, it feels like an appropriate time to ask this question.

For those who don't know, as a result of working from home recently, Mojang has not been able to complete all the changes and additions promised as part of the Caves and Cliffs update, and for some unknown reason, their solution to that was to split the update in half, and release two half-updates spread over 1.17 and 1.18. Why they didn't just delay the entire update until it was all finished I will never know. If you want to read more about that, you can see what they wrote in the announcement.

So, you may be asking, what is actually in 1.17? Well, this is a brief list which I compressed from the wiki. For a full list, I refer you to the wiki page.
- An assortment of blocks, in varying stages of completion. Some are inaccessible in normal gameplay until 1.18.
- An assortment of items, of varying usefulness. Some are inaccessible in normal gameplay until 1.18.
- Axolotl, Goats, and Glow Squids. Mainly decorative mobs, with little gameplay purpose.
- Minor world generation additions and changes, although world generation will be changed significantly in 1.18 so these changes will be of limited effect.
- Backend changes which aren't really noticeable to most people but are nice to have in the game
- Some texture changes
- Assorted minor changes (eg: lava in cauldrons, beacons visible from further away)
- Switch from Java 8 to Java 16

The vast majority of the features promised as part of the Caves and Cliffs update have been postponed to 1.18, due for release in "winter". The features which have been added in 1.17 may be changed between now and then, especially with regards to world generation and some blocks/items.

So, the question is, would you like the server to update to 1.17 now, even though the full Caves and Cliffs experience is not ready and will change for the next update, or should we stick on 1.16 and wait for the release of 1.18 to get the whole update together in its complete state? For background, VC skipped 1.13 and 1.15 recently, due to a number of reasons, so skipping an update isn't an unusual thing.

Feel free to discuss. There's no rush, I'm mainly posting this to get an idea of what people think, my opinion might swing heavily one way or another when it comes to me actually testing stuff.

General Discussion / Sixteen
« on: 8 October 2020, 03:33:16 PM »
So, it's been a while since I've done one of these. Sorry for the delay (Mojang kept releasing bug fixes, lockdown caused issues, uni work needed doing, a rocket launch got pushed forward giving me loads of work, I was baking a banana cake, and other excuses which hopefully make you forgive me for the delay).

VillageCraft is now running Minecraft 1.16.4

This update contains both 1.15 and 1.16, which while significantly better than 1.14, still aren't as smooth as previous versions. I've done my best to minimise major issues that could happen, but some things will be broken. If you find any bugs, glitches, errors or things that have broken in the update, please tell me or any staff member, and we'll try and fix it. The easiest way to report a bug is using /bug in-game, or using this link. Every member of staff can see bugs reported that way. Alternatively, you can get in touch with me by sending me a DM here on the forums. I'm @Luis on the VC Discord, and you can ping me in any chat, or send me a private message. Finally, you can also send a message directly to my phone using the "Report a problem" button in the bottom right of VcStatus. If you can't get a hold of me (or you don't want to, I don't mind), you can get in touch with any member of staff and they'll pass it on to whoever can deal with it.

Additionally, there's a couple of other things I'm throwing in with this update. For full disclosure, I did intend to do a "16 New Things for 1.16", but I couldn't get everything done in time. See above for excuses.

1. Minecraft Update
The server is now running 1.16.3, bringing with it all the new features. Hope you all enjoy them!
(At some point we'll update to 1.16.4 once Mojang releases it, I'm not sure yet if this can be done server-side, or if it'll require a client update too)

2. Advancements
We've also worked to add some new advancements to the server, taking on board your feedback from a Parliament discussion a while back. We'll be adding more in the future (I've got some exciting ideas for cool ones), but right now there should be plenty to keep you advancement hunters entertained! If any don't work, let me know, and I'll try and fix them. And yes, I'm fully aware that some structure ones are given to you as soon as you log in, trust me, we've been trying to fix it for ages, so it'll just have to be.

3. Crafting Tweaks
There's new recipes added to the game too, meaning you can craft even more of the cool items in the game. You can now craft bells, cobwebs, name tags, saddles, magma blocks, red nether bricks, and dispensers in a less awful way. You can also uncraft clay, quartz, nether wart, prismarine, wool, string, and all the types of ice. Anything dyeable should now be dyeable with any colour, rather than just white. Oh and finally, you can turn smooth stone to cobblestone in a stonecutter, so if you have silk touch on everything like me it's less of a pain to get cobble when you need it. (There's a possibility these won't show up in your recipe book until you've used them once, but I've found that quite a hard bug to reproduce reliably)

4. MicroBlocks
Another new thing is the ability now to use micro blocks on VC, for all your decorative needs. We've added micro versions of most blocks in the game, which you can buy from the Quaila market, or from Wandering Traders. That brings me onto my two next points...

5. Wandering Trader Improvements
There was a discussion about this a few months ago, and I sneakily made a plugin to improve the Wandering Trader. Now, instead of selling you seeds for a ridiculous amount of emeralds, they actually have useful trades. Every trader will have 4-8 items from a random biome, 1-4 micro blocks, and up to 1 food, potion, and enchanted book. This is a cool way of getting things from biomes which may be far away from where you've set up your village, and hopefully will make the traders a more fun addition to the game. If anyone is interested in a more detailed description, let me know, and I'll stick one up here on the forums. Oh, and the random biomes include the nether ones, so this might be a neat way of getting new things from the update.

6. Random Markets
In the coming days/weeks, we'll be setting up random markets around Qualia, mainly along the boardwalk. These will work in much the same way as the current market, except the items for sale will change randomly a few times a day. It'll be a cool way of getting different items, and we plan to use it to add fun new things to the market, some of which will only be obtainable that way. More information about this will be announced on Discord as it becomes available.

7. Marriage Master has been added
Following the Parliament vote, the Marriage Master plugin has been added, so now you can all get married to your VC soulmates. I think I've implemented everything the vote suggested. If there's any problems, let me know.

8. New Gods
Similarly, the New Gods plugin has been added following its Parliament vote. Again, if there's any problems, get in touch with me and I'll try to fix them.

9. Various tweaks and bugfixes
I've tried to fix some random bugs and things in this update, so hopefully things will be less broken. Notable mentions are chairs now working on any stair, and the riptide enchantment working correctly. Also, I've disabled mob spawning on scaffolding blocks, because I don't know why that's even a feature in the first place. I'm also working to up the render distance of the server using some new features in Paper, I'm still tweaking it based on how the server handles under load, but over the next week or so I'll find a sweet spot. This also affects mob view distance, so hopefully now you'll be able to see entities from further away (128 blocks for players, 64 blocks for everything else)

10. Nether Expansion
Above the Nether now there's portals taking you far out into the new terrain, so you can explore the update without having to fly for ages. We've opened up 4 portals, each taking you to a relatively random point in the Nether. You can access it at the new style Nether spawn, through any of the portals in Qualia. If you don't know where one is, the main one is at the easternmost end of the boardwalk, near the lighthouse. It's also on the Qualia metro.

11. Overworld Expansion
Similarly, there's new portals in the Overworld, taking you out to new far-out places. We're opening up some now for the biomes which have had a recent update, and in in future updates new portals will be created for the biomes. This will be especially important in things like 1.17, in an effort to make the new terrain and world generation more accessible without the need for a new world. It's just next to Qualia Rail Station. (If you're reading this right after it's posted, note we're still working on this right now)

12. Voting Rewards
The reward bags you get when voting have also been updated slightly to include new things from 1.16, including netherite items. If you want netherite without having to blow up half the Nether, this may be a good way of getting it. Remember, every time you vote it helps being new people to VillageCraft.

13. Discord Account Status
Starting in roughly a week from now, we're implementing a feature in which you will be unable to talk on the Discord unless you've linked your MineCraft account. This is in an effort to reduce the amount of spam on the server, and hopefully make sure the community truly is made up of the people who play. There's more detail in the dedicated thread for it.

And more?
We've got many more fun and exciting things in the pipeline, which will be added to VillageCraft once they're ready. I've seen some of the upcoming features, and they look great. Looking more longer term, I had a discussion with Ten a few weeks ago which led to an interesting idea, and personally my plugin ideas list is still pretty long.

Finally, in accordance with the rules set out in the Parliament vote, I'm setting a time of 23:59 Eastern Time on 2020-10-23 for when the farming regulations expire (For clarity, that'll be 24 October 2020, 12:59:00 AM in your current time zone).

Thanks again for being part of VillageCraft, you are what makes this community so fun.

General Discussion / Discord Verification
« on: 8 October 2020, 03:33:00 PM »
In an attempt to try and reduce spam on the Discord server, we will soon be requiring you to verify your Minecraft account with Discord before you will be able to send messages. This is a really easy process:

1. In-game, type /discord link. This will give you a message with a 4-digit number in.

2. In Discord, click on the "VC Server" user, it should be the first user in the list on the right. In the message box that appears, type that 4-digit code.

3. That's it, you're all linked!

You can link your accounts now, and we won't be making the changes straight away so you can continue to use Discord as normal in the transition period. We will be making the switch on the 1st of December, so make sure you've linked your account by then to ensure you can continue to use Discord without interruption.

If for whatever reason you have difficulties (Eg: you can't log on to VC by December), message any member of staff, and we can manually verify you, that's no problem.

Off-Topic Discussion / Phosphine detected in Venus's atmosphere
« on: 14 September 2020, 06:51:52 PM »
So, this is odd...

A paper was published today detailing the discovery of phosphine gas in clouds in the atmosphere of Venus. Phosphine is a gas which is produced by bacterial life on Earth, and its presence elsewhere may be a strong indicator of biological activity. The team behind the discovery claim any other known method of producing phosphine in the clouds would only produce about 0.01% of the amount they detected.

Their observations were detected by two independent telescope arrays, many months apart. Here on Earth, phosphine has a lifetime of a few hours, and while thought to be higher on Venus, the short lifetime indicates there is a continuous production of phosphine.

Their data also indicates that the gas is only found at certain latitudes, which correspond to where we would expect a biological source to survive. However, the clouds in which it was detected are comprised of sulphuric acid, which means if the source of this gas is a result of life, it is either life which has significantly different biochemistry to anything we know, or bacteria which has developed a shield against one of the strongest acids there are.

Alternatively, this is being produced by a (non-biological) chemical reaction which is something we've never seen before. Phosphine is naturally produced in Jupiter and Saturn, but those conditions cannot exist on Venus. If this is chemistry, it's new chemistry.

General Discussion / A note on 1.16
« on: 21 June 2020, 06:25:10 PM »
The 1.16 update is supposed to be officially released on Tuesday, which will be nice, however the server won't update instantly. Updating the server will be my highest priority as of tomorrow though. There's some other things that need to update following Mojang's release (Spigot, Paper, most of our plugins plugins), and I need to go though and test all of them in the same way I go through and test everything on every update. This will take time, but should take nowhere near as long as 1.13/1.14 did. It's also possible that I'll need to fix some of the older plugins we use, as I've done in previous updates.

Newer or simpler plugins may update quickly, others may take a couple of weeks to update, and some of our older ones probably won't be updated, so I'll need to thoroughly test them to make sure they still work. Depending on how long other things things take to update, I might be able to squeeze in some final coding of my own to finish off some features I was hoping to get ready for the 1.16 update, but we'll see. I can't promise anything.

VC will update once I'm happy everything can be updated without things falling apart. If there's any major delays I'll let you know, but right now it's looking like a few weeks (which is as vague as I'm going to be for now)

General Discussion / Voting rewards are back!
« on: 11 May 2020, 10:41:27 AM »
This will be effective as of 2100 UTC today (~6.5 hours from this post)

That's right, you will now get rewards again when you vote for VC on the websites listed below.

Taking on board suggestions from the Vote Crates and GUI Shop suggestions, I've created a new plugin which hopefully makes voting more exciting. When you vote for VC, you'll get a reward bag (which actually looks like a box), with a randomised reward. To redeem this reward, simply click with it, and you'll get up to 5 items, plus a little bit of money. If you want though, you can trade them for whatever you want in-game. There's 5 tiers of rewards, each with better and better loot, but the higher tiers are much rarer. You can craft 9 of any tier reward bag into 1 of the next tier, if you fancy your chances saving up for a big reward.

Additionally, for every 10 votes you cast, you'll get a bonus reward bag. This doesn't follow the same chance as the regular rewards, meaning all 5 tiers are equally likely to show up. This is a good way to get those big prizes.

I'm not going to say what's in the reward bags, but there's a very big pool, and there's some items in there which are hard to get. Building blocks, potions, enchantments, tools, armour, resources, there's loads of things you can get! I've also added in a feature where the highest tier has the chance of giving you tools, armour, or potions with enchantments/effects that you can't get in survival, so you might be lucky and get some cool loot from that.

If you've got a few reward bags and you don't want to open them all at once, you can click on any container with it, and it'll deposit the rewards into the container. This way you can spam click a chest with a stack of bags and get through them quickly. If there's not enough room in the inventory (or your inventory if you're opening them manually), then they'll drop on the ground near you.

There's no commands, you just get the reward bag when you vote. If you're not logged in at the time, you'll get the bag when you next log in automatically.

VC Staff may also give out these reward bags as prizes for things we do, so there may end up being other ways of getting these beyond just voting.

Let me know if you find any bugs, or if you have any suggestions!
Happy voting!
~ Luis

General Discussion / Building Competition Vote!
« on: 17 April 2020, 09:03:56 AM »
This vote will remain open for around 5 days (will close at sometime on the 23rd, I forget which timezone I made it use). It uses STV, so you can rank builds in order of preference. It's a new experimental voting system, it will probably have bugs, and it might not work, but please, vote away!

(If you click through to "see results" after voting you can see the winners at the current time, which will update as more people vote. Only the final result will be valid)

For one of the many side projects I'm working on I needed some stuff, and in the process I accidentally created these. They're not the best quality in the world, but if you want them, they're here. Other resolutions can be available if you want. Enjoy :)

General Discussion / VC is now running Paper
« on: 1 April 2020, 07:54:31 AM »
I've switched form Spigot to Paper, so *hopefully* we should see a little less lag. It also gives us cool new things like async chunk loading, which I'm looking forwards to.

As part of this, there may be some bugs and glitches with updates. If you find anything wrong, or anything that doesn't work like it used to, please tell me, and I'll do everything in my power to fix it!
@ me on discord (@Luis), send me a PM on here, or use /bug to report it. I'll try and get back to you as soon as I can

Also, I've used Paper's new "eigencraft redstone" feature, which replaces Mojang's laggy redstone mechanics with a much more optimised one. It shouldn't break anything, but if it does, let me know and I'll switch it back. More info on that is on this reddit post. This won't affect 99.9% of you I expect.

Oh, I've also fixed the end. It's now the correct chunks, and lag-free after I removed the 50k wither skulls. Please don't do that again :)

General Discussion / 1.15 or 1.16?
« on: 31 March 2020, 03:24:18 PM »
This is a quick informal poll. Would you be interested in updating to 1.15 for a bit, potentially only for a couple of weeks until 1.16 drops, or do you want to stay on 1.14 until 1.16 comes out and just skip over 1.15 like we did with 1.12 -> 1.14?

If you see people on the server who play often but don't have forum accounts (I know there's been a few new players recently), please share this with them.

Leave opinions / comments below, I'm all ears!

General Discussion / Minor changes to entities
« on: 27 March 2020, 06:46:28 PM »
Hi all,

Like you probably have, I've noticed the server is lagging a bit. What you might not know is that I ping the server every minute to check it's okay, and if the TPS is less than 10, I get a notification on my phone. Every minute. I just checked, and in the last 7 days I've had 551 notifications. Here's what I've done to try and fix it.

Firstly, I checked to see what was causing the lag. Turns out, unsurprisingly, it's lagging because each tick is taking longer than 50ms to run. In the hour that I timed everything for, ticking entities in the main world and the End took up 98.19% of a tick's time, meaning everything else has to try and squeeze into the other 1.81%, which it can't do. This causes it to spill over into the next tick's timeslot, which dominoes on until it manages to catch up, usually because one or more of you will time out, so it can unload a bunch of chunks and free up time.

To try and solve that, I've changed how entities tick. For starters, entities won't activate until you're closer, and they won't track you as far now. If you want exact numbers, they're in the first reply to this thread. For what it's worth, VC has always had slightly different numbers to Vanilla, so much so that I'm not even sure what Vanilla uses any more. I've also lowered the spawn cap ever so slightly, so less mobs should try and spawn at any one time. Finally, items and XP should merge from slightly further away.

Most of you shouldn't notice any major difference with this in regards to gameplay, except hopefully less lag. If you have any farms or anything that's been broken by these changes, please let me know, and I'll try and work with you to tweak the settings a bit to fix it. I don't want your work to go to waste.

These changes will take effect at the next schedules restart (2020-03-28 05:00:00 GMT)

Let me know if you notice any improvement to the server's performance after tomorrow. My script will continue to monitor it, so I should get a nice chart on the VcStatus page, but I'm interested in hearing what you guys think

- Luis
