Parliament | Suggestions / Re: Reset the Nether in 1.16 DISCUSSION
« on: 6 April 2020, 02:07:49 PM »
VC has done a nether reset before, no? If so, I'm all for it again despite having stuff in the nether, I would just want a grace period where we have announcements on the server and people can get their items out. I think I mostly just have a few blaze farms with decent items... trying to think of any major villages in the nether we could preserve with clipboard. anyone got any examples?

Ya a grace period makes total sense. We should preserve the Prison of the Banished area.

I remember hearing something from another server where they had reset all the chunks in the world that had not been loaded for more than an hour to reduce disk space. I think this, if implementable, would be a useful way to keep older, more developed areas intact while freeing up some other places near spawn without much infrastructure.. While I would have no idea how to implement it (@luisc99 might be able to help some), I would think that this could be a good way of striking a balance of sorts.

An hour!? Only an hour? So if someone logs out for more than 1 hr they're fucked? haha

As someone who maintains more than one farm in the nether, I feel that I should at least have some input here. As of right now, I have 3 things I have built that I would prefer survive a nether reset, also I have punched a rather large hole in the nether ceiling using the 1.12 dragon egg trick that I quite like and would prefer to keep, whether this means having a staffer just WE in a new hole or something can be addressed later.

I am entirely open to working with staff to help ensure my constructions remain unharmed should the nether be reset. The three structures  that I would much like to keep around are as follows:

1: My nether fortress farm, as well as the 128 block radius area around said farm that I mob proofed (this took weeks)

2: a small construction that fits perfectly in 1 chunk, that if deleted may result in accidentally crashing the server

3: The Eldrin Blaze farm, while not mine, I think is really nice, as such, I would much enjoy if this farm is preserved as well.

Given that the 1.16 update makes the nether a more varied place, where building an interesting village is viable, I am fully in favor of a reset, on the contingency that I can get assistance in preserving some of my (and others') hard work.
@luisc99 what do you think about the proposed 'compromise'? is it viable?
also pretty sure we can only preserve places you own should this reset, but if the owner (i think luis lel) says sure then ya, all your stuff is on the table if luis thinks we can make it work

The compromise of manually preserving certain areas is easily viable.

I don't think it's fair to all the people who've built all sorts of things in the nether to have all their hard work deleted. Besides, all anyone has to do to see the new areas in the nether after the update would be to walk to a point no one's been to in the nether, and the new generation would begin. I don't think resetting the nether is necessary, or, in fact, beneficial.

I think that we should not reset the nether for all the reasons stated, but I understand the other side. So as Luis mentioned in a previous thread, we could add new warps to new regions as new updates emerge. So I propose that we keep the neither as it is, then create a new warp to the area of which will be regenerated. This way those with things built can keep them and those who want to experience the new nether can do so, its a win win for everyone as far as I'm concerned. It will also be much easier to make a new warp than trying to rebuild everything that people have done (even with staffs help, it will be easier for them and players to make a new warp than W/E and rebuilding and such - which could increase lag, of which we are all too much familiar with atm)

This is also a fine option. Just use the nether further out. I'm fine with a reset too, if the new nether updates are so much better

Reports & Grievances / Re: Staff Abuse from Theodorf

For anyone unfamiliar, and since it pertains to this situation, the rules governing PVP on VC are available in the official VC Rules list. See #10 specifically https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gkj5W6BdrLTeYSSK5GF64cd3OU5gyV7U2PRnKOWWPAw/edit#gid=0

Hi everyone, this is Chef, I just wanna say that Theodorf had been pvping with me for a while and killed me a few dozen times, but I thought it was all jokes and didn't have anything important on me so I didn't have any issue with it. Later, I was teleporting around just to see what people were up to and to say hello, and when I teleported to Azral, Theodorf came with (uninvited). While I personally didn't have any problem with the way he was acting, I can see why anyone who has important things to do (ie. not me) would be annoyed. Have a good night all :)

Thanks for your input!

The last CM election was indeed approval voting, which I like. Approval+disapproval voting is where you can vote for or against someone, which I also like. VC forums allows for approval voting quite easily, but not a+d.

Parliament | Suggestions / Re: State of TNT in outlands.
« on: 4 April 2020, 07:58:31 PM »
Why not build a simple village, get protected, and turn on TNT?

317
I still don't know which way I stand on this, but just throwing ideas here...

The way Parliament works here on the forums is that anyone can participate, but only MPs can vote in polls. I like it this way. Discord has a decent permissions system and this would likely be possible there too (can someone confirm? @Jakrelia )

As for format... I'm torn. Forums and chat messaging are fairly different. Forum posts are thought out, and easy for anyone to go read if they need to get caught up. Chat messaging like Discord is pretty easy to get lost in. In a long conversation, with hundreds and hundreds of messages, it can become a tall order to expect everyone to sift through it all. But there are obviously some notable benefits to a live conversation.

I don't know what to think. But no matter what happens, I do like the idea of a Parliament chat on the discord. It would provide a good place to ping people when there's a vote occurring, even if it ultimately links back to the forums.

Reminder that you can have TNT turned on in your own village if you'd like.

« on: 2 April 2020, 03:16:30 PM »
The problem with TNT in the outlands is it makes it difficult for those who are starting villages who don't have protection yet. By being an explicit opt-in in villages, it helps to control against unwanted destruction. I do get your point though. Maybe some kind of public mining village in the middle of nowhere would work, with TNT enabled there?

I'm not sure where I stand on this, but my counter to your point is that you're describing grief. Grief is grief and the offender will be punished, whether they did it with TNT or manually block by block. TNT would potentially be harder to clean up due to chain reactions tho...

Poll added.

To be clear, would this effectively move the Parliament to the Discord? Votes would occur there? If so, we should word it to be more clear.

Parliament | Suggestions / Re: Add Gapples to Market
« on: 30 March 2020, 11:07:00 PM »
Currently hunting for new market plugin(s), since it seems we may need to abandon showcase, which is itself barely receiving updates.

For the time being, I don't see why not just add gapples at 100k to the market. Doesn't harm anything.

Normally Id agree but I thought some people might oppose it because Gapples are, as of current, a finite resource, and I thought there might be more opposition, but given there's none I think I may just add it to /warp oo unless people want a full vote on something with no opposition lol

Maybe we should add a note for things that seems to have unanimous consent at nomination stage and thus bypass a vote lol.

Otherwise:
If anybody is against adding 100k gapples to /warp oo speak now or die lol

Additionally, today I did perform a ban to all players on for a temporary 5 minutes in order to utilize World Edit capabilities for the server. Unfortunately, as you know, the server isn't running too well right now, and, well, that stays true for simple commands such as trying to move a house to another place. [...] but I found it to be the only way to proceed without crashing the server and disturbing Luis for the fourth time that day.

I'm not going to get involved in this, but I'd say if possible try to avoid banning people to use WE unless it's essential. If it can wait, I'd suggest waiting until the server is a little quieter.

Also, don't worry about bothering me. That's why I'm here, it's my job to fix the server when it goes wrong. I'm almost always around, and if not, I'll generally fix it as soon as I see it

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the worldedit was causing the server to hang, so they did the tempban to try to save it from crashing, I think unsuccessfully.

« on: 30 March 2020, 03:36:46 PM »
Am I allowed to start the nomination process for the new CM election myself or does staff have to do it? It's past time, and since another wave of players are back to play it's a good time to change it up again.

Also, should credit Sax for recommending this first :)

Yes, please, go right ahead! You can use the format of the previous one to do this one to make things easy

That would be arousing, I think we should just do one warp point though, I don't want to be the only on several million blocks away from everything.

Hmm, maybe we'll slowly open 1 at a time?

General Discussion / Staff recommendations
« on: 5 March 2020, 11:03:14 PM »
Brothers and sisters, friends, comrades, people of VillageCraft, everyone,

As part of the player-driven Revive VC campaign, we've been informed / it has been requested that we need new staff to help us all get to that goal. New staff that know the players that currently play, and who want to have an integral role in actively improving and helping the server. Many of our current staff are inactive or semi-inactive, and are out of touch with the current active players, so it's time to add some fresh faces. Staff nominate and vote on all Staff additions and removals, so help us out.

We don't normally ask players to recommend themselves or others, but on this rare occasion, please do exactly that. Please suggest a player for Staff. Please add a little line or two as to why it makes sense. Please also state if you are active, semi-active, or inactive. Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: Moon
« on: 8 February 2020, 07:38:06 PM »
Noket made the plugin that ran the Moon, but he left the server. At one or two points he showed interest in returning to develop plugins, but it never happened, and I don't think it will at this point.

Luis may have worked on the Moon a bit in the meantime, but I forget, as his contributions are many and this one hasn't been a focus I don't think. As it stands right now, the Moon is not being worked on.

We could open it as a fairly normal world that has a different theme but no plugin (no oxygen or gravity alterations). I would personally like to see that everyone follow a guideline to: keep the visible part of landscape/surface fairly intact when building or mining, not build giant spawner/autofarm things, and build within the Moon theme. You know, keep it moony.

Thoughts?
I think the oxygen stuff still works there for the most part, I'm pretty sure just jetpacks are broken but I'll have to double check

edit: never mind i just remembered we disabled it lol

Jetpacks are gone, but with Elytra+firework jets, whatever I guess? Did you check if oxygen is still enabled?

Ah ok that didn't really come across in the last conversation with the phantoms. Please could you (no rush) add them to Mythrim's protection.

Many thanks!

Gamalin

The phantoms thing kindof settled the debate as to whether we should be protecting against both old and new mobs in the regular protection. The answer is yes to both, so owners can go ahead and choose which they do or don't want. The major distinction comes with unusual mobs like phantoms that have benefits if you want them around, which I guess deserved a vote and decision to be made.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: New Years Resolutions?
« on: 22 January 2020, 03:54:57 PM »
I do a similar accountability thing with going to the gym. My friend and I go together, and if I try to skip or make excuses she holds me accountable and knows I would feel bad skipping and leaving her by myself, and she will use that to encourage me to go, and I do the same for her. Getting someone to help hold you accountable for what you do is definitely a big help to do something you're otherwise unmotivated to do. I only wish schooling had more support systems to help kids do their work :(

This is a good way to get you to the gym. Usually with working out, the hardest part is starting, but once you get going it's good, so this accountability thing you have going is perfect because it gets over the hardest part.

That's pretty clever and sounds fun, how did you guys come up with/decide you should do that?

It is fun, and really helpful. It came about after many, many conversations about productivity and letting a week slip away with nothing done. Conversations about the failures of the school system, the strange nonsensical aspects of the society we live in, and especially about what life really is about and how to best spend your time.

I feel that writing a list is an excellent way to keep yourself on task. Especially when you wake up in the morning and your brain feels very unfocused, it's really easy to just start scrolling thru the internet mindlessly or something and suddenly you've not been productive for hours and hours. If you have that list, which you should write the night before (or the start of the week to a friend), then when you're feeling unfocused, you just look at it and you already have guidance (that you already gave yourself during a moment where you were focused). So you start the list, and it feels good to get things checked off.

He also brought up the idea that it's easier to stay focused when you feel accountable to someone else other than yourself. So that, combined with the list idea, created the accountability partner idea.

If you sometimes struggle with being productive, try these ideas!

Me and my friend are doing weekly goals and holding eachother to them. Kinda like accountability partners.

So, for the start of each week we write down our goals for eachother (and ourselves), and during the week we check in, and at the end of the week we say where we succeeded and where to improve on. It's a good method, because now you're not alone in trying to use raw willpower in being productive.

Also, if you're doing school or work fulltime, it's very easy to lose track of other things you want to do, so this really helps with that.
