So as I promised here is a super ultra rare pic of me, in my kendo uniform and armour.

The bamboo sword is called a shinai and is really light. The armour is called bogu (with men- head armour, kote- wrist/hand armour and do- body armour).
Kendo is fast and training mostly consists of whacking each other with the shinai or doing the leg exercises that make the legs ache. Also the screaming at each other. I have grading very soon, and will hopefully, finally be a proper "kendoka" :D
Some random video I found on youtube, this is shiai-geiko (basically sparring practice).

Is there a Kendo steel sword?

Is there a Kendo steel sword?
There is a kendo solid wooden sword called a bokuto or bokken (shinai are hollow), these are mostly used for form training (called kata), as well as if you want to build strength up. The steel swords are just katana. Yes, I am learning to use katana.
Advanced kendoka can use real swords for kata training, have to be careful, cause you really can take someone's arm off with those- kata is in pairs! I plan to get a katana eventually.

Can you even get a katana with those strict Australian laws? :D

Of course, pretty sure there is a license involved but I do practice kendo so I have a valid reason to own one.
